Job description

As the leading global type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy organization, Breakthrough T1D helps make everyday life with T1D better while driving toward cures. We invest in the most promising research to turn ideas into life-changing therapies and devices. We work with government, regulatory officials, and insurance companies to address issues that impact the T1D community -- breaking through barriers that limit access to care worldwide. We provide resources and guidance that makes it easier to live and thrive with T1D. This is more than a moment -- we're empowering a movement for the T1D community. Share your support and help educate and empower individuals facing type 1 diabetes.

Our mission is to improve lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life changing breakthroughs to treat, prevent and ultimately, cure T1D and its complications. Always, we are guided by a single purpose: As we drive towards curing type 1 diabetes, we help make everyday life better for the people who face it.

The Part-Time Temporary Development Coordinator will be an integral member of the Breakthrough T1D Greater Wilmington Chapter, providing hands-on fundraising, volunteer, and event support across the chapter's portfolio of fundraising and community engagement activities.

The Greater Wilmington Chapter manages a diverse annual event portfolio including Walk, Gala, golf events, community fundraising events, and donor cultivation activities. This position works closely with the Chapter Director to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of fundraising efforts while helping ensure exceptional experiences for donors, sponsors, volunteers, and participants.

The role requires a high degree of independence, initiative, and ownership of assigned projects from start to finish. The ideal candidate is a highly organized, resourceful self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment, communicates confidently with volunteers and community partners, and can independently move projects forward while recognizing when collaboration or escalation is needed.

As one of the top-performing territories in the country, the North Carolina Territory plays a vital role in the organization's overall success. The territory encompasses the Greater Wilmington Chapter, Piedmont Triad Chapter, Charlotte & Western NC Chapter, and Triangle Chapter.

With a team of 14 staff members, four Chapter Boards, and more than 13 annual events, the North Carolina Territory works collectively to drive significant growth and impact, generating more than $8.6 million in total net revenue.

Although this is a remote position the candidate must reside within the Wilmington area.

Key responsibilities

In partnership with the Chapter Director, volunteer leadership, and event committees, support the planning and execution of the chapter's signature fundraising events.

  • Support Gala auction procurement: identify prospects, conduct outreach and follow-up, track commitments, and secure items by established deadlines.
  • Drive Gala and golf committee activity between meetings, including meeting preparation, volunteer follow-up, action-item tracking, and execution of committee-led initiatives.
  • Coordinate vendors, venues, and partners on assigned event logistics, and provide hands-on event preparation and event-day support.
  • Support table host, guest, golfer, and participant recruitment, including audience development strategies that maximize participation and revenue.
  • Support recruitment and coordination of participants for signature events and donor cultivation events.

Walk, peer-to-peer, and community fundraising (approximately 30%)

Support recruitment, fundraising activation, stewardship, and execution for the Greater Wilmington Walk and related peer-to-peer and community fundraising initiatives.

  • Conduct participant outreach and fundraising coaching calls that measurably increase team and individual fundraising.
  • Support the recruitment and activation of Walk teams, participants, families, schools, and corporate partners.
  • Support corporate team and sponsorship prospecting through research, outreach preparation, follow-up, and stewardship.
  • Engage newly diagnosed and newly connected families in coordination with Community Engagement staff and volunteers.
  • Recruit and coordinate event-day volunteers, vendors, materials, and logistical needs.

Fundraising, volunteer, and donor support (approximately 20%)

Provide day-to-day support to the Chapter Director on donor, sponsor, and volunteer follow-up.

  • Compile prospect lists and basic background information on potential sponsors, donors, and auction contributors at the Chapter Director's request.
  • Carry out assigned outreach and follow-up with donors, volunteers, and community partners using messaging and materials provided by the Chapter Director.
  • Support donor and sponsor stewardship logistics, including thank-you communications, recognition, and fulfillment of sponsor benefits.
  • Track committee assignments and deadlines between meetings and follow up with volunteers on outstanding items.
  • Identify opportunities, challenges, and next steps proactively
  • Represent Breakthrough T1D professionally and enthusiastically with donors, volunteers, participants, vendors, and community partners.

General chapter and event support (approximately 5%)

  • Assist with preparation of event materials, communications, logistics as needed.
  • Perform other fundraising and event-related duties as assigned by the Chapter Director.

Qualifications

  • Two or more years of experience in fundraising, nonprofit development, event management, sales, account management, community engagement, hospitality, marketing, or a related field preferred. Some college preferred.
  • Self-starter who can take ownership of an assignment, identify next steps, and move work forward with limited day-to-day supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines with exceptional follow-through and attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the confidence to communicate with donors, sponsors, volunteers, vendors, and community leaders by phone, email, and in person.
  • Creative and resourceful problem-solver comfortable in a fast-moving event and fundraising environment.
  • Familiarity with event planning, donor stewardship, or volunteer management strongly preferred.
