What does a remote coding consultant do?

As a remote coding consultant, you provide medical coding services. Your duties depend somewhat on the area in which you specialize; a coding consultant can examine medical files, billing information, and insurance and reimbursement data to ensure accuracy. Other coding consultants review patient data, apply the proper code for each diagnosis and procedure, and submit an invoice for billing or insurance purposes. Remote coding consultants can also review coding practices and systems in a health care facility. You assess coding practices and suggest improvements for both inpatient and outpatient facilities. As a remote professional, you handle your responsibilities from home and access records and databases via the internet.

What does a remote coding consultant do?

A Remote Coding Consultant is a professional who provides expert advice and support on coding projects from a remote location. Their responsibilities often include reviewing code, recommending best practices, assisting with software development, and troubleshooting technical issues for clients or organizations. They typically communicate with clients via email, video calls, or project management tools to collaborate on projects. Remote Coding Consultants may specialize in specific programming languages or industries, and often help organizations improve code quality, efficiency, and security. Their role is essential for companies seeking flexible, expert guidance without the need for on-site staff.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote coding consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Coding Consultant, you need advanced knowledge of medical coding systems (such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS), a relevant certification (like CPC, CCS, or RHIT), and experience in interpreting healthcare documentation. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, coding software, and auditing tools is typically required. Strong attention to detail, self-motivation, and effective written communication are essential soft skills for excelling in a remote environment. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate code assignment, compliance with regulations, and efficient communication with healthcare providers, which are critical for reimbursement and patient record integrity.

How do remote coding consultants typically collaborate with clients and teams while working off-site?

Remote Coding Consultants often use a range of communication and project management tools to stay closely connected with clients and team members. They participate in virtual meetings, share progress through collaborative platforms, and provide updates via email or chat. Building strong communication habits and proactively clarifying project requirements are essential for success in this role. Remote consultants may also need to adapt quickly to different team cultures and workflow processes, making flexibility and strong interpersonal skills particularly valuable.

Job description

Technical Lead | SQL | Snowflake | Tableau | AWS
Build the Future of Data Solutions
At Arkatechture, we believe data should empower better decisions. Since 2012, we've partnered with financial institutions across the country to solve complex data challenges through modern analytics, cloud technologies, and AI-powered solutions.

Our mission is built on three simple pillars:
  • Do something meaningful
  • With a great team
  • Earning what you deserve
We're looking for an experienced technical leader who is passionate about solving complex data problems, mentoring others, and helping customers unlock the full potential of their data. If you enjoy writing SQL one minute, architecting a cloud data solution the next, and coaching teammates along the way, we'd love to meet you.
The Opportunity
As the Technical Lead, Data Analytics, you'll serve as the senior technical expert for a portfolio of enterprise customers while helping shape the future of our Support Services team.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role, not a people manager who occasionally reviews code. You'll spend much of your time solving challenging SQL and cloud data platform problems, partnering directly with customers, mentoring analysts, and driving technical excellence across the organization.
While this role is expected to grow into formal people leadership, your technical expertise, problem-solving ability, and customer partnership skills are what will make you successful from day one.

Technical Leadership
  • Serve as the senior technical resource for our Business Intelligence and Data Analytics Support team.
  • Lead the investigation and resolution of complex customer issues involving data, analytics, and cloud platforms.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement scalable, long-term solutions-not just quick fixes.
  • Review SQL and BI object changes while promoting development best practices.
  • Mentor and coach analysts, helping elevate the technical capabilities of the entire team.
  • Identify opportunities for automation and continuous improvement across support processes.
  • Lead root cause analysis meetings as necessary to dig into any thematic issues that crop up and how we can mitigate them
Customer Partnership
  • Help customers maximize the value of Arkatechture's analytics platform through technical guidance and best practices.
  • Partner closely with Customer Success to improve customer satisfaction, retention, and platform adoption.
  • Support customer meetings by offering technical expertise, hold office hours, expand upon Knowledge Base articles and Learning Management System training for customers.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Data & Analytics Expertise
  • Design, develop, troubleshoot, and optimize complex SQL solutions.
  • Troubleshoot ELT processes, data pipelines, and BI reporting environments.
  • Monitor and resolve issues with Tableau and Power BI dashboards and scheduled refreshes.
  • Collaborate across Engineering, Customer Success, and Product teams to deliver scalable customer solutions.

We're looking for someone who enjoys solving difficult technical problems and helping others do the same.
  • 6+ years of experience working with SQL in production environments
  • Deep expertise with relational databases and cloud data platforms (Snowflake, Databricks, SQL Server, Oracle, Redshift, Synapse, BigQuery, or similar)
  • Strong experience designing, troubleshooting, and optimizing data warehouses and analytics solutions
  • Experience with Tableau and Power BI
  • A strong understanding of data modeling, ELTprocesses, and modern analytics architecture
  • Exceptional analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Outstanding communication skills and the ability to build trusted customer relationships
  • Experience mentoring teammates or serving as a technical leader
  • Experience with Agile development practices and tools such as Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket
Experience with any of the following is a plus:
  • Professional Python experience
  • Experience supporting cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS
  • Financial services, banking, or credit union technology
  • Customer-facing consulting or technical support leadership
  • Modern data engineering and cloud architecture
  • Data governance or data quality initiatives
  • AI or machine learning technologies
At Arkatechture, you'll work alongside curious, collaborative people who genuinely enjoy solving hard problems together.

We offer:
  • Flexible remote work with optional access to our Portland, Maine office
  • Four-day work week after three years of service
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits
  • Medical, disability, life insurance, and optional dental and vision coverage
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Generous paid time off and paid holidays
  • Professional development and certification reimbursement
  • Opportunities to influence our technical direction while continuing to grow your own expertise
Our Culture
We're proud of the culture we've built. We hire people who are humble, curious, collaborative, and driven by continuous improvement.

Our values guide everything we do:
  • Put the team first.
  • Practice humility.
  • Take pride in your work.
  • Stay curious.
  • Care for your community and the environment.
  • Take the work seriously, but not yourself.
Ready to Apply?
If you're excited about building innovative data solutions, solving complex technical challenges, and helping shape a growing technical team, we'd love to hear from you.
To help us get to know you, please include your resume and answer the following question in the cover letter section of the application:

Describe the most technically challenging SQL or cloud database problem you've solved. What was the issue, how did you approach it, and what was the outcome? (250 words or less.)

Don't meet every qualification listed above? We still encourage you to apply. Research consistently shows that talented candidates, particularly women and underrepresented groups, often hesitate to apply unless they meet every requirement. If this role excites you, we'd love to hear from you.
