What is a remote cloud engineer?

A Remote Cloud Engineer is an IT professional who designs, implements, and manages cloud-based infrastructure and services for organizations, all while working remotely. Their responsibilities often include configuring cloud environments, ensuring security and compliance, automating deployments, and troubleshooting technical issues. Remote Cloud Engineers work with platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and collaborate with teams using virtual communication tools. This role allows professionals to contribute to cloud projects without needing to be physically present at the company's office, making it ideal for those seeking flexible work arrangements.

What does a remote cloud engineer do?

As a remote cloud engineer, you work from home to design and develop software that runs in the cloud and maintain cloud systems and hardware. If you specialize in software development, then you typically write and test software. If your focus is on infrastructure, then your duties revolve around designing and deploying hardware and storage systems, implementing backup procedures, and ensuring the security of computer resources. In an information management role, your responsibilities include managing high-volume data migrations or supporting clients by architecting solutions for complex business needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote cloud engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Cloud Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, cloud architecture, and experience with platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications. Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud security best practices is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and troubleshooting. These skills ensure secure, scalable cloud solutions and seamless teamwork, even when working remotely.

How do remote cloud engineers typically collaborate with team members across different time zones?

Remote Cloud Engineers often work with globally distributed teams, which means effective communication and coordination are essential. Collaboration is usually managed through tools like Slack, Microsoft Teams, or Jira, while regular video meetings help keep everyone aligned. Engineers need to be proactive in documenting their work and updates to ensure transparency and continuity, especially when team members may not be online simultaneously. Flexibility with schedules and strong written communication skills are key to overcoming time zone challenges and maintaining team productivity.

  • Support Azure governance, policy enforcement, and compliance configurations aligned to healthcare regulatory requirements (HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2 Type 2).
  • Periodic on-call rotations for 24/7 support requests.
  • Continuously expand your Azure and broader cloud engineering experience and skills.
  • Managed critical L2 Support Engineering needs, such as deployments of new services using Infrastructure as Code and other innovative solutions to pressing problems with Azure healthcare workloads.

Qualifications we are seeking

  • A US citizen living in the US.
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert or Azure Administrator Associate required.
  • Azure DevOps Engineer Expert or Terraform Associate certifications preferred.
  • Able to work across US time zones.
  • Three years of demonstrated experience with Microsoft Azure.
  • AWS and/or Google Cloud experience is a plus -- candidates who have worked across both major cloud platforms are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Hands-on experience building and deploying infrastructure as code using Terraform and/or Bicep.
  • Proficiency with Azure core services: Azure Virtual Machines, Azure Kubernetes Service, Azure Virtual Network, Azure Active Directory, Azure Monitor, Key Vault, and Azure Policy.
  • Basic knowledge of networking and network layer topology, including Azure-native constructs (VNets, NSGs, Azure Firewall, ExpressRoute).
  • Understanding of Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Experience with Azure DevOps pipelines or equivalent CI/CD tooling.
  • Self-starting and motivated. Curious and always learning.
  • Ability to take ownership of individual tasks while leading and mentoring a team.
  • Passion for delighting customers with innovative solutions.
  • Superior verbal and written communication internally and externally to provide a seamless client experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-growing, dynamic company.
  • Willing to be part of an on-call rotation and work occasional off-hours during maintenance windows.
  • Depending on the position offered, bonuses and other forms of compensation may be included in the total compensation package, along with a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits. We will share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

  • Employer-matching 401(k) plan.
  • Choice of top-end MacBook or Windows laptop.
