Job purpose
The Certified Medical Dosimetrist is a member of the radiation oncology team who knows the overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology treatment machines and equipment. They are aware of procedures commonly used in treatment delivery. They have the education and expertise necessary to generate radiation dose distributions and calculations in collaboration with medical physicists and radiation oncologists.
Essential Job Functions
- Design a treatment plan using a computer and/or manual computation with optimal beam geometry to deliver a prescribed radiation dose and spare critical structures per the Radiation Oncologist's prescription.
- Identify and contour normal and dose-limiting structures using images from one or more data sets. Assumes proficiency in image registration with various image data sets, including CT, MRI, and PET.
- Create and transfer reference images and localization markers for portal verification and treatment delivery to include DRRs, CBCTs, and other IGRT methods, as specified.
- Supervise, perform, or assist in simulations and tumor localization using specified imaging devices, including but not limited to CT, MRI, and PET.
- Supervise, perform, or assist in fabricating compensation filters, custom shields, wedges, and other beam-modifying devices.
- Supervise, perform, or assist in the planning and implementation of the production of molds, casts, and other immobilization devices.
- Communicate with the radiation therapist(s) and assume an advisory role in implementing the treatment plan, including the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement, and other treatment or imaging parameters.
- Perform calculations to deliver the prescribed dose accurately, document all pertinent information in the patient record, and verify the mathematical accuracy of all calculations by an approved method.
- Provide assistance and technical support to the Medical Physicist in radiation safety and protection, quality assurance of treatment plans, and radiation oncology equipment.
- Operates and performs quality assurance, under the direction of the Medical Physicist, on the treatment planning computer(s).
- Supervise, perform, or assist in applying specific patient and/or beam dosimetry methods as directed by the Medical Physicist physician.
- Assist in brachytherapy procedures by performing treatment planning and dose calculations.
Qualifications
- Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment in addition to the following:
- Knowledgeable in anatomy, physiology, clinical oncology, radiobiology, radiation physics, and radiation safety.
- Expertise in the technical aspects of radiation oncology and medical physics to develop optimal treatment plans.
- Knowledgeable in health care informatics-including the resources, devices, and methods to acquire, store and retrieve data. Tools include computers, clinical guidelines, current medical terminology, and information and communication systems.
- Possess good communication and interpersonal skills to facilitate the exchange of information with patients, family members, the radiation oncology treatment team, and outside entities.
- Possesses high-level critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Works independently but collaborates with the Radiation Oncology teams, including physicians, therapists, nursing, and medical physics.
- Maintains a working knowledge of radiation safety principles and practices and current national and state rules and regulations.
- Has the ability to interpret criteria and develop treatment plans as defined by relevant treatment protocols.
Education/Experience
- CMD or equivalent certification
- Clinical experience as a certified Medical Dosimetrist in a major cancer center preferred.
Working conditions:
This position works in the radiation department of a busy oncology/hematology/radiation clinic. This position does not have direct patient contact.
Physical requirements:
This position requires that the employee be able to sit at a desk and work on a computer for up to eight hours a day. Some walking and standing may be required to complete tasks.
