This is a position in located in El Paso, and can be a remote from home position. We are seeking a detail-oriented and reliable Accounting Bookkeeper to manage day-to-day financial operations and support organizational leadership with accurate reporting and compliance. This role is responsible for bookkeeping, payroll processing, financial reporting, and grant management, with a strong emphasis on fund accounting and nonprofit best practices.
Key Responsibilities
Bookkeeping & Financial Operations
- Maintain accurate financial records using QuickBooks, with a strong understanding of fund accounting principles
- Record, categorize, and reconcile deposits twice per month
- Prepare checks as instructed and manage check disbursements
- Manage PayPal accounts, transfer funds as requested, and review activity regularly with the Director
- Oversee bookkeeping for major events (e.g., Synod, conferences, standing committee meetings)
Payroll & Compliance
- Process monthly direct deposit payroll
- Prepare and file quarterly Form 941 and annual Forms W-2 and 1099
- Ensure compliance with applicable payroll and reporting requirements
Reporting & Budgeting
- Prepare monthly financial statements for the Standing Committee with support from the Finance Director, Treasurer, and/or Finance and Audit Committee
- Prepare monthly support and giving reports; copy payments and distribute reports as required
- Prepare annual giving statements
- Assist in preparing the annual budget and periodic budget updates in collaboration with leadership
Grants & Distributions
- Manage grant tracking, reporting, and distribution payments
Collaboration & Communication
- Meet regularly with the Director to review financials, obtain deposits, and exchange supporting documentation
- Work closely with the Treasurer, Finance Director, and Finance and Audit Committee
- Perform other duties as requested by the Director or Bishop
Qualifications
- Experience with QuickBooks required
- Knowledge of fund accounting, preferably in a nonprofit or faith-based organization
- Experience with payroll processing and payroll tax filings
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and confidentiality
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and work independently
- Strong organizational and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior nonprofit or church accounting experience
- Familiarity with grant accounting and donor reporting
