What is a remote chief engineer?

A Remote Chief Engineer is a senior professional responsible for overseeing engineering operations, projects, and teams while working remotely. They coordinate the design, development, and implementation of technical solutions, ensuring that engineering standards and objectives are met. This role often involves managing remote teams, facilitating communication across time zones, and leveraging digital collaboration tools to maintain productivity. Remote Chief Engineers are expected to have strong leadership skills and a deep understanding of their technical field. Their work is crucial for organizations that operate in distributed or fully remote environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote chief engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Chief Engineer, you need extensive engineering expertise, leadership experience, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with project management software, remote collaboration tools, and industry-specific technical systems is essential. Strong problem-solving, communication, and decision-making skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for effectively leading engineering teams, ensuring project success, and maintaining high standards while working remotely.

How does a remote chief engineer effectively manage and support distributed engineering teams?

As a Remote Chief Engineer, you will leverage digital collaboration tools and cloud-based project management platforms to coordinate team efforts across different time zones. Regular virtual meetings, clear documentation, and setting transparent expectations are essential for maintaining alignment and ensuring progress. Successful remote leaders also prioritize open communication and foster a culture of trust, empowering engineers to make autonomous decisions while providing guidance and support as needed. This approach helps maintain productivity and morale, even when team members are working from various locations.

Job description

Texas HR Team is partnering with an exciting client to identify a Senior Product Engineer to build and harden the systems behind Lighthouse - the web platform and agentic AI layer that HQ, franchise operators, and coaches use to run the largest science-based kids training program in the country.

We're looking for an experienced individual contributor who's genuinely excited about modern AI-assisted engineering: someone who wants to ship serious software, faster, without lowering the bar.

This is a hands-on role on a small, high-leverage HQ team. Your code runs in every center, supporting member management, the sales/lead pipeline, learning, reporting, and the AI assistant coaches and operators rely on daily. You'll own real systems end-to-end and have a direct line to the product decisions that shape what gets built next.

This is not "vibe coding." We expect strong judgment, careful review habits, and real tests where they matter. AI tools are a force multiplier for engineers who already know what good looks like. That's who we're hiring.

What You'll Do:

  • Build and maintain backend services on the Lighthouse platform, a Kotlin Multiplatform codebase (Spring/WebFlux backend, shared domain models, Compose-for-Web frontend) on GCP, backed by Postgres and integrated with the server platform over gRPC.
  • Own features end-to-end: domain model → service + persistence → API → migration → rollout behind feature flags → production monitoring.
  • Take real ownership of revenue-critical domains, including a sales/lead-management CRM with its pipeline state machine and background reconciliation jobs, third-party membership system synchronization (Glofox), and the reporting that feeds the AI assistant.
  • Build across a product roadmap the business is actively pulling for: attribution and partner reconciliation behind a member referral program, lead-management pipeline enhancements, AI-assisted reporting, inventory management, and the operations console used every day by center leaders.
  • Raise the platform's safety net by strengthening integration testing where it matters most, especially tests that prove multi-tenant data isolation, along with observability and maintainability that help engineers investigate and resolve issues quickly.
  • Harden critical systems including concurrency in nightly sweeps, query performance as centers and international regions scale, idempotency, and correctness in revenue- and attribution-related workflows.
  • Help carry Lighthouse into potential international expansion through thoughtful data scoping, performance optimization, and multi-region architecture considerations.
  • Use AI tools (Claude Code, multi-agent review, planning skills, custom workflows) deliberately across planning, implementation, review, and debugging.
  • Report to the CTO and collaborate closely with engineers, QA, and the server-platform team.

What We're Looking For:

  • 5-10 years of professional software engineering experience with deep backend expertise in services, data modeling, and APIs.
  • Strong fluency in a statically typed JVM language, with Kotlin strongly preferred. Strong Java or Scala engineers interested in Kotlin will also be considered.
  • Comfort across the stack: SQL (Postgres), HTTP/gRPC APIs, authentication and authorization, multi-tenant architectures, background jobs, CI/CD, and cloud platforms (GCP preferred).
  • Strong production debugging instincts spanning service logs, database state, and vendor APIs.
  • High standards for correctness, idempotency, observability, and practical test coverage.
  • Demonstrated interest in AI-assisted engineering, including experience with Claude Code, Cursor, or similar tools in production environments.
  • Clear written communication through implementation plans, design documents, pull requests, and code reviews.
  • Strong individual contributor mindset. No management responsibilities and no client-facing work. We're hiring you to ship.

Nice to Have:

  • Kotlin Multiplatform and Compose-for-Web experience.
  • Experience building or auditing LLM-driven features or AI assistants in production.
  • Vendor integration experience including scheduled syncs, webhook ingestion, reconciliation jobs, and drift detection.
  • GCP expertise with Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, BigQuery, and observability tooling.
  • Comfort working on a small team where the best ideas win, regardless of title.

How We Work:

  • Remote, US-based. We hire across the United States and work collaboratively during normal business hours.
  • Small team, big surface area. Every change you ship is felt across hundreds of centers.
  • AI as a teammate. Modern tooling is a real part of how we plan, write, review, and document software.
  • Honest engineering. We modernize where it creates value, preserve what works, and document decisions clearly so the next engineer can pick up the thread.

Why Join This Team:

The organization behind Lighthouse is on a mission to help kids win at life through a science-based curriculum delivered in centers across the country. Lighthouse is the platform that keeps members managed, leads converting, coaches equipped, and operators making better decisions with the data and AI in front of them.

You'll join a small engineering group where individual ownership is high, the work has measurable impact, and the AI-engineering bar is being set, not followed.

This role offers:

  • Fully remote employment within the United States.
  • Competitive compensation, plus bonus and excellent benefits.
  • Modern equipment.
  • A real budget for AI tooling and model access.
  • Direct ownership of production services from day one.

If this sounds like the type of team you'd thrive on, Texas HR Team would love to connect with you.
