Mechanical Designer

Location: Bellevue, WA Job Type: Contract Work Model: Hybrid (Onsite & Remote) Schedule: 40 hours/week Pay Rate: $37.00 - $74.00/hour DOE

System One is seeking a Mechanical Designer to support the design and development of advanced nuclear reactor technology. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside multidisciplinary engineering teams developing next-generation energy systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop 3D CAD models and detailed engineering drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Design mechanical and structural components, test fixtures, flow loops, rigs, and sub-scale test articles.
  • Create fabrication and assembly drawings in accordance with ASME standards.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analyses and apply GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Support structural, thermal, neutronic, radiological, and safety analyses through CAD model development.
  • Conduct design trade studies and recommend optimal engineering solutions.
  • Maintain configuration control of models and drawings using PDM/PLM systems.
  • Participate in design reviews and collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and testing teams.
  • Prepare technical documentation, presentations, and engineering reports.
  • Review drawings for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with engineering standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 7 years of CAD design experience with strong proficiency in SolidWorks.
  • At least 3 years of relevant mechanical design experience.
  • Strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience creating fabrication drawings and applying Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with PDM/PLM systems preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in the nuclear industry or another highly regulated engineering environment.
  • Knowledge of ASME NQA-1, ISO 9001, or similar quality standards.
  • Experience coordinating with suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Familiarity with reactor components, nuclear equipment, or advanced energy technologies.
