Remote Building Energy Modeling information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Building Energy Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Building Energy Modeler, you need expertise in building science, energy analysis, and a background in engineering or architecture, often supported by certifications like LEED or BEMP. Proficiency in specialized software such as EnergyPlus, eQUEST, IES VE, or OpenStudio is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret results and collaborate with remote teams and clients. These skills are critical for producing accurate models, optimizing building performance, and ensuring compliance with energy codes and sustainability goals.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a professional working in remote building energy modeling?

Professionals in remote building energy modeling typically spend their days analyzing architectural drawings, inputting data into energy modeling software, and running simulations to forecast building performance. They often collaborate with architects, engineers, and project managers via virtual meetings to ensure the accuracy of their models and provide energy efficiency recommendations. Additionally, they prepare detailed reports summarizing findings and may assist with compliance documentation for green building certifications. Adapting to remote workflows and clear digital communication are important aspects of this role.

What is remote building energy modeling?

Remote building energy modeling is the process of analyzing and simulating a building's energy usage and performance using specialized software, all conducted from an off-site location. Professionals in this field use digital building plans, utility data, and sometimes remote sensing tools to create detailed models that predict energy consumption, identify efficiency opportunities, and support sustainability goals. This approach allows for collaboration across distances and can reduce costs and time compared to traditional, on-site modeling. It is commonly used in both new construction and retrofitting projects to optimize energy systems and comply with regulatory standards.

Position Description: Energy Efficiency Engineer

As an Energy Efficiency Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, implementing, and managing energy efficiency projects, programs and measures aimed at reducing energy consumption and promoting sustainable practices for utilities. This role includes advanced energy modeling and analysis to support both new construction and existing building projects, with a strong emphasis on multifamily housing. The Engineer will develop and review energy models, assess whole-building and measure-level performance, and support program design and optimization through data-driven insights. You will support new construction including design review, code compliance pathways, and collaboration with developers, design teams, and trade allies to influence high-performance building outcomes-particularly in multifamily applications. You will work closely with external and internal teams to support program needs around measure development and engineering review by providing technical assistance. Your knowledge in energy conservation, building systems, and emerging technologies will contribute to delivering exceptional efficiency programs that meet client goals and regulatory requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and review building energy models (e.g., whole-building and measure-level) to estimate energy savings, support incentive calculations, and inform program design.
  • Technical review of incentive applications, including energy modeling outputs and engineering calculations to validate projected savings.
  • Provide technical support for new construction projects, including design review, energy code compliance pathways, and performance verification.
  • Support multifamily program delivery, including analysis of building types, system configurations, and measure strategies specific to low-rise and mid/high-rise properties.
  • Collaborate with developers, design teams, and trade allies to influence efficient design decisions and optimize energy performance in new construction projects.
  • Translate energy modeling results into actionable recommendations for program teams, clients, and external stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance program offerings through advanced modeling approaches, emerging technologies, and market insights.
