A Remote Backend .NET Developer is a software engineer who specializes in building and maintaining the server-side components of web applications using the Microsoft .NET framework, such as ASP.NET. They work remotely, meaning they perform their job duties outside of a traditional office, often from home or another location. Their responsibilities typically include designing APIs, managing databases, optimizing application performance, and ensuring secure data handling. These developers collaborate with front-end developers, project managers, and other stakeholders, using tools that support remote communication and code collaboration. The role requires strong programming skills in C# or VB.NET, as well as experience with cloud services, databases, and version control systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Backend .NET Developer, and why are they important?

Familiarity with databases (like SQL Server), cloud platforms (such as Azure), version control systems (like Git), and relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: .NET Developer) are highly beneficial. Excellent problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies enable you to build robust, scalable applications, collaborate effectively with distributed teams, and deliver high-quality solutions remotely.

Job description

About the role
We are looking for experienced, backend-leaning product engineers to help expand the capabilities of our industry-leading AI analytics platform.
At Hex, we're deeply focused on building powerful, integrated AI features that augment and accelerate analytics workflows. The possibilities here are incredible, and we're uniquely positioned to reinvent how people think about understanding data.
In this role, you'll work on a product team building complex workflows that increase the capabilities, reach, and ergonomics of Hex's agentic analytics platform. We're especially focused on features that enable Hex's AI agent to operate across more customer segments and surface areas, including APIs, MCP, and command-line interfaces.
What you will do
Our backend product engineers work on features across the entire Hex application. Here are some example projects:
  • Build and extend Hex's API and CLI to enable powerful, ergonomic workflows for our most sophisticated technical users
  • Design MCP server and client implementations to expand entry points into our capabilities
  • Design and implement a next-generation access control system, including role-based access control (RBAC), admin request/approval flows, and tiered admin roles that scale with complex organizations
  • Own full-stack product changes end-to-end, from backend policy enforcement to admin-facing workflows, ensuring these enterprise features are intuitive, reliable, and secure
  • Propose and implement well-architected, scalable systems in collaboration with the broader Hex team
About You
  • 5+ years of backend or full-stack software engineering experience
  • Skilled at building systems with high levels of complexity and intricate business logic
  • Deep interest and/or experience in developing state-of-the-art agentic workflows involving disparate systems and tools
  • Experience working in a remote-first team, with strong communication skills in that context
  • A passion for technical collaboration, including RFCs, code reviews, and architecture discussions
  • Hands-on familiarity with enterprise integrations: SSO, SCIM-based provisioning, audit logs, MFA, and delegated access
  • A strategic mindset that balances business and product goals with engineering excellence-you understand tradeoffs between user value and technical complexity and operate pragmatically
  • Willingness to make changes anywhere in the stack to drive impact
Our stack
Our product is a web-based notebook and app authoring platform. Our frontend is built with Typescript and React, using a combination of Apollo GraphQL and Redux for managing application state and data. On the backend, we also use Typescript to power an Express/Apollo GraphQL server that interacts with Postgres, Redis, and Kubernetes to manage our database and Python kernels. Our backend is tightly integrated with our infrastructure and CI/CD, where we use a combination of Terraform, Helm, and AWS to deploy and maintain our stack.
In addition to our unique culture, Hex proudly offers a competitive total rewards package, including but not limited to, market-benched salary & equity, comprehensive health benefits, and flexible paid time off.
The salary range for this role is: $198,000 - $295,000
The salary range shown may be a reflection of additional factors such as geographical location and skill ranges/levels we're open to. Placement in the salary range will be decided upon completion of the interview process, taking into account factors like leaving room for growth, internal fairness & parity, your demonstrated skills, and the depth of your experience. Our Recruiting team will be able to provide more details during the interview process.
