Job description

Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) – Backbase & Digital Banking

Location: Remote – Americas
Eligible locations: Canada, United States, and Latin America
Engagement: Full-time or contract, depending on location

About Aequilibrium

Aequilibrium is a digital consulting and technology company helping financial institutions modernize digital banking, improve member experiences, and deliver complex platform transformations. We work with credit unions, banks, and fintech partners across North America, supporting strategy, UX, engineering, integration, QA automation, cloud, and platform delivery.

We are looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) with strong experience in automation, digital banking, and quality engineering to join our team. This role is ideal for someone who thinks like a developer, understands complex enterprise systems, and can help clients build reliable, scalable, and high-performing digital banking platforms.

About the Role

As a Senior SDET, you will help design, build, and maintain automated testing frameworks for web, mobile, API, and backend systems. You will work closely with developers, architects, product owners, DevOps engineers, and client stakeholders to improve quality across the software delivery lifecycle.

You will play a key role in ensuring that digital banking solutions are reliable, secure, performant, and ready for production use.
We are open to both full-time employees and independent contractors, depending on your location and preference. For candidates based in Canada, the expected salary range for this full-time position is CAD $110,000–$115,000 per year, plus our standard benefits package.

What You’ll Do
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable test automation frameworks for digital banking applications.

  • Develop automated tests for web, mobile, API, backend, and integration layers.

  • Create and maintain automated regression, functional, smoke, integration, and end-to-end test suites.

  • Build and maintain mobile test automation using Appium, Espresso for Android, and XCTest for iOS.

  • Support quality engineering practices across Agile delivery teams.

  • Collaborate with developers to define testable acceptance criteria and improve code quality.

  • Implement automated testing within CI/CD pipelines.

  • Develop API automation for RESTful services, microservices, and integration points.

  • Support performance testing, load testing, and reliability validation.

  • Analyze test results, identify defects, and work with engineering teams to resolve issues.

  • Help define testing standards, automation patterns, and quality gates.

  • Participate in code reviews for automation frameworks and test scripts.

  • Mentor other QA engineers and contribute to a strong quality engineering culture.

  • Work directly with client teams in a consulting environment.

What We’re Looking For
  • 7+ years of experience in software quality engineering, test automation, or SDET roles.

  • Strong experience designing and maintaining automated testing frameworks.

  • Strong programming skills in one or more languages such as Java, C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, or Kotlin.

  • Experience with UI automation tools such as Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, or similar.

  • Experience working with Appium and in developing and maintaining mobile test automation with Espresso for Android and XCTest for iOS.

  • Strong API testing experience with tools such as REST Assured, Postman, Karate, and similar tools.

  • Experience testing microservices, APIs, and distributed systems.

  • Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI, or similar.

  • Experience with Git, pull requests, branching strategies, and code reviews.

  • Strong understanding of Agile delivery practices.

  • Experience with SQL and database validation.

  • Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues across frontend, backend, mobile, API, and infrastructure layers.

  • Strong communication skills and comfort working directly with client stakeholders.

Nice to Have
  • Experience with Backbase, VeriPark, or other digital banking platforms.

  • Experience in credit unions, banking, fintech, lending, originations, payments, or member onboarding.

  • Experience with performance testing tools such as JMeter, BlazeMeter, Azure Load Testing, OctoPerf, or similar.

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.

  • Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as Grafana, Azure Application Insights, Splunk, Kibana, Datadog, or OpenTelemetry.

  • Experience with contract testing, OpenAPI, OAuth, identity, authentication, or authorization flows.

  • Experience with BDD tools such as Cucumber, Gherkin, or SpecFlow.

  • Experience with AI-assisted development or testing tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, ChatGPT, Claude, or similar tools.

  • Consulting or client-facing delivery experience.

What Makes You Successful

You are a strong technical QA professional who can operate as an engineer, not just a tester. You understand how modern applications are built and how to validate them at every layer. You can work independently, communicate clearly, and help clients improve their quality practices.

You are comfortable in complex enterprise environments and enjoy solving problems across systems, teams, and technologies.

Why Join Aequilibrium
  • Work on meaningful digital banking transformation programs.

  • Collaborate with senior engineers, architects, designers, and product leaders.

  • Support leading credit unions and financial institutions across North America.

  • Join a remote-first team with a strong consulting and engineering culture.

  • Help shape the future of quality engineering in digital banking.
