They use advanced software, sensors, and algorithms to ensure these systems can operate independently and safely. Their work involves tasks like programming control systems, integrating hardware components, and troubleshooting issues from a remote location. These engineers often collaborate with teams virtually and leverage cloud-based tools to monitor and update autonomous systems deployed in various environments.

What are some common challenges faced by remote autonomous systems engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Autonomous Systems Engineers often encounter challenges related to communication and collaboration, as they work with multidisciplinary teams across different locations and time zones. Managing system integration and troubleshooting without on-site access can also pose difficulties, requiring strong documentation and remote diagnostic tools. Staying updated on rapidly evolving technologies in autonomy further demands ongoing learning. To address these challenges, engineers should leverage clear communication channels, utilize collaborative platforms, and participate in continuous training opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote autonomous systems engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Autonomous Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics, control systems, programming (such as Python or C++), and a relevant engineering degree. This role is ideal for an advanced engineering professional capable of leading complex OS modernization efforts, configuration management migrations, and infrastructure hardening initiatives, while also executing hands-on runbooks, automation, incident response, and service onboarding. The successful candidate will work closely with SRE, platform engineering, application development teams, and customer stakeholders to ensure project success from initial planning through final delivery.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering, production engineering, SRE, or infrastructure engineering experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Python.
  • Experience leading or supporting OS modernization and large-scale Linux migrations, including RHEL7 to EL8/EL9.
  • Experience with configuration management tools such as Chef, CINC, Ansible, Puppet, or similar platforms.
  • Ability to triage, own, and resolve complex production issues and S-bugs.
  • Experience hardening CI/CD pipelines, observability frameworks, rollout processes, and rollback mechanisms for infrastructure transitions.
  • Ability to provide Tier-2 production support and incident response in a follow-the-sun operating model.
  • Experience building, maintaining, and configuring RPM packages.
  • Experience executing operational runbooks for OS upgrades, configuration changes, and production support.
  • Experience onboarding services to monitoring and logging stacks.
  • Strong automation skills with the ability to reduce repetitive operational work.
  • Strong documentation skills, including technical procedures, runbooks, and migration steps.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-moving technical environment with minimal oversight.

Useful Qualifications:

  • Proven experience planning, implementing, or supporting logging and monitoring tools.
  • Experience with Chronosphere, Prometheus, Grafana, and/or Splunk.
  • Experience enabling, supporting, and guiding developers during cloud cutovers and component migrations.
  • Experience with cloud migration, application modernization, or infrastructure modernization efforts.
  • Perl scripting experience.
  • Prior experience in SRE, platform engineering, production engineering, or large-scale infrastructure modernization.

Scope and Solution Expectations:
The contractor will be responsible for supporting the technical transition of legacy systems to modern environments. Key deliverables and operational tasks include:

  • Migrating and updating configurations across approximately 1,700 systems and virtual machines from RHEL7 to EL8/EL9.
