What is a remote autonomous systems engineer?

Remote Autonomous Systems Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain autonomous systems—such as drones, robots, or vehicles—while working remotely. They use advanced software, sensors, and algorithms to ensure these systems can operate independently and safely. Their work involves tasks like programming control systems, integrating hardware components, and troubleshooting issues from a remote location. These engineers often collaborate with teams virtually and leverage cloud-based tools to monitor and update autonomous systems deployed in various environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote autonomous systems engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Autonomous Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics, control systems, programming (such as Python or C++), and a relevant engineering degree. Experience with simulation tools like ROS (Robot Operating System), MATLAB, and familiarity with machine learning or AI frameworks are typically required, along with certifications in automation or robotics being advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective remote communication set top candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualities are essential for designing, troubleshooting, and improving autonomous systems while collaborating efficiently within distributed teams.

What are some common challenges faced by remote autonomous systems engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Autonomous Systems Engineers often encounter challenges related to communication and collaboration, as they work with multidisciplinary teams across different locations and time zones. Managing system integration and troubleshooting without on-site access can also pose difficulties, requiring strong documentation and remote diagnostic tools. Staying updated on rapidly evolving technologies in autonomy further demands ongoing learning. To address these challenges, engineers should leverage clear communication channels, utilize collaborative platforms, and participate in continuous training opportunities.

Job description

Company Overview

Allen Control Systems (ACS) is a cutting-edge defense startup founded by two former Navy electrical engineers with a proven track record in robotics and software. We are developing an autonomous gun turret using advanced computer vision and control systems to precisely detect, track, and neutralize enemy drones.

With an engineering-first culture, ACS values technical excellence and innovation. Backed by our founders’ successful exits from two previous ventures acquired for a combined $180M in 2022, we are committed to ensuring that the groundbreaking technologies we develop will have a real-world impact.

About The Role

We are looking for a Software Engineer, Platform & Infrastructure to own the build systems, CI/CD pipelines, software-in-the-loop simulation infrastructure, and on-vehicle deployment tooling that our engineering team depends on every day. This is a mid-to-senior-level role for a generalist software engineer with strong fundamentals and practical experience in deployment and integration workflows.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines including unit test execution, code coverage reporting, and automated build checks running on GitHub Actions or equivalent; ensure the pipeline runs reliably on server infrastructure in the background without manual intervention.

  • Own and improve the build system and on-vehicle software deployment tooling; maintain CMake-based build configurations and ensure software can be reliably packaged, versioned, and pushed to aircraft in the field.

  • Maintain and extend software-in-the-loop simulation infrastructure, enabling engineers to run and validate flight software against simulated environments on remote servers without requiring physical hardware.

  • Manage flight log upload, storage, and retrieval pipelines using AWS or equivalent cloud storage; ensure logs from fielded aircraft are reliably captured, organized, and accessible to the engineering team.

What You’ll Need

  • Strong general software engineering fundamentals; proficiency in C++ is required and the ability to read and contribute to a C++ codebase is expected from day one.

  • Hands-on experience implementing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines; familiarity with GitHub Actions or a comparable CI platform and the ability to configure automated test, build, and deployment workflows.

  • Experience with software deployment and integration in embedded or constrained environments; comfort working with CMake-based build systems.

  • Ability to work independently and drive tasks to completion without close supervision; comfort operating in a fast-moving environment where requirements and priorities evolve.

You’ll Stand Out

  • Experience with AWS or similar cloud infrastructure for data storage, log management, or compute workloads.

  • Prior work in aerospace, defense, robotics, or autonomous systems where software runs on physical vehicles or platforms.

  • Experience with software-in-the-loop or hardware-in-the-loop simulation infrastructure.

  • Familiarity with perception, path planning, or other autonomy subsystems that this infrastructure will eventually need to support.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary

  • ACS Equity Package

  • Health, Dental, Vision Insurance

  • Paid Time Off
