Remote Autonomous Systems Engineer information

What is a remote autonomous systems engineer?

Remote Autonomous Systems Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain autonomous systems—such as drones, robots, or vehicles—while working remotely. They use advanced software, sensors, and algorithms to ensure these systems can operate independently and safely. Their work involves tasks like programming control systems, integrating hardware components, and troubleshooting issues from a remote location. These engineers often collaborate with teams virtually and leverage cloud-based tools to monitor and update autonomous systems deployed in various environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote autonomous systems engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Autonomous Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics, control systems, programming (such as Python or C++), and a relevant engineering degree. Experience with simulation tools like ROS (Robot Operating System), MATLAB, and familiarity with machine learning or AI frameworks are typically required, along with certifications in automation or robotics being advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective remote communication set top candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualities are essential for designing, troubleshooting, and improving autonomous systems while collaborating efficiently within distributed teams.

What are some common challenges faced by remote autonomous systems engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Autonomous Systems Engineers often encounter challenges related to communication and collaboration, as they work with multidisciplinary teams across different locations and time zones. Managing system integration and troubleshooting without on-site access can also pose difficulties, requiring strong documentation and remote diagnostic tools. Staying updated on rapidly evolving technologies in autonomy further demands ongoing learning. To address these challenges, engineers should leverage clear communication channels, utilize collaborative platforms, and participate in continuous training opportunities.

FMS Mission Planning Systems Engineer, Lead
The Opportunity:
Serve as the Lead FMS Systems Engineer supporting Foreign Military Sales (FMS) Mission Planning programs within the Airspace Mission Planning (AMP) enterprise. Lead the identification, decomposition, and validation of technical requirements needed to adapt U.S. Mission Planning System (MPS) capabilities into releasable, country-unique Mission Planning Environments (MPEs) while ensuring protection of Critical Program Information (CPI), compliance with ITAR, and adherence to all foreign-releasability constraints.
Provide systems engineering leadership across the full lifecycle of FMS mission-planning capabilities, including architecture tailoring, integration analysis, validation, technical evaluation, and configuration alignment. Support the Government in developing Technical Requirements Documents (TRDs), performing Component Replacement Evaluations (CREs), reviewing Engineering Releases (ERs), and evaluating capabilities where no prior U.S. technical baseline exists. Participate in systems engineering processes, technical interchanges, system security and program protection activities, program integration, architecture monitoring, and governance boards to ensure commonality across Mission Planning Enterprise products. Develop technical assessments, special studies, and interoperability analyses as required. Support site visits for design, integration, certification, and evaluation activities. Ensure FMS MPEs, tailored components, tools, utilities, scripts, and security patches are integrated, validated, and delivered in accordance with the AMP PWS.
This role directly supports the Government's ability to deliver releasable, interoperable, and technically sound mission-planning capabilities to partner nations.
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 10+ years of experience with Air Force Mission Planning Systems, such as JMPS or JOMS, including requirements, integration, validation, and technical evaluation
  • Experience supporting Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programs, including policy, process, releasability, and country-unique capability tailoring
  • Experience with Component Replacement Evaluations, Engineering Release reviews, and development of Technical Requirements Documents
  • Knowledge of systems engineering processes and practices for software-intensive systems, including requirements decomposition, traceability, integration, and verification
  • Knowledge of Critical Program Information protection, ITAR, and foreign-releasability constraints for mission-planning software
  • Knowledge of Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) engineering processes
  • Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience with FMS Tailored Component Validation, FMS Tailored MPE Validation, and FMS Integrated Product Line activities
  • Experience with supporting multi-platform, multi-contractor integration environments
  • Knowledge of DoD policies and directives for mission-planning systems, cybersecurity, and releasability
  • Possession of excellent oral and written communications skills
