What is remote automotive programming?

Remote automotive programming refers to the process of configuring or updating a vehicle's software or electronic control units (ECUs) from a distance, without needing to be physically present with the car. Technicians use specialized tools and secure internet connections to access the car's systems, often to reprogram keys, update firmware, or troubleshoot issues. This approach saves time and allows for greater flexibility, especially for fleet management or vehicles in remote locations. The technology is increasingly important as modern vehicles become more software-driven and interconnected.

What are the typical collaboration methods used by remote automotive programming teams?

Remote automotive programming teams often rely on a mix of cloud-based development environments, version control systems like Git, and regular virtual meetings to collaborate effectively. Team members typically use project management tools such as Jira or Trello to track progress and assign tasks. Open communication channels, such as Slack or Microsoft Teams, are essential for quickly resolving issues and sharing updates. This structure supports a cohesive workflow despite team members working from different locations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote automotive programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Automotive Programmer, you need strong skills in embedded systems programming, automotive software development, and a relevant degree such as computer engineering or computer science. Familiarity with automotive protocols (like CAN, LIN), diagnostic tools, and programming languages such as C/C++, as well as experience with tools like Vector CANoe and MATLAB/Simulink, are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective communication skills help you collaborate remotely and tackle complex technical challenges. These skills ensure you can deliver reliable, innovative automotive software solutions while working effectively in distributed teams.

Job description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

As a Senior Manager for Test and Development, you will manage a team that performs full vehicle and sub-system development and validation testing, both on-site at Rivian’s Arizona Proving Grounds, and at other remote sites worldwide. Your team supports multiple focused development, support and validation testing areas; including Dynamics, Benchmarking, Powertrain, NVH, Body Controls, Chassis Durability, Homologation and others from the beginning of a program through production launch.

Responsibilities
  • Manage team workload, scheduling and budget; including resource allocations covering vehicles, staff, instrumentation, track scheduling and offsite logistics.
  • Coordinate with facility and on-site staff to ensure available resources (surfaces, facilities, etc.) are aligned to team needs and are meeting usability requirements.
  • Collaborate with Program, Fleet and domain / department teams to plan and optimize vehicle usage across limited assets. Advocate for priority where required to meet test timing.
  • Manage team resources to support early program system and vehicle integration bring-up, development and troubleshooting across multiple concurrent vehicle model lines and maturity timelines, for both the T&D team and other end-users.
  • Supervise team planning, preparation, execution and documentation of specific portions of the vehicle and component DVP&R using JIRA, FLOW, and Rivian proprietary tool sets.
  • Support asynchronous onsite and offsite test and validation activities, including field quality investigations, pre-production and post-production software quality testing, supplier and VIP visits and demonstrations, among others.
  • Develop and refine reporting and tracking tools to continually improve overall department and team efficiency; focusing on integration of emerging AI applications and in-vehicle utilities.
  • Create and modify documentation including test work instructions, Rivian test specifications, and summary reports from vehicle testing projects.
  • Perform subjective and objective evaluations in one or more areas of personal expertise for remote design and engineering teams.
  • Travel as needed (up to 25%) to support prototype vehicles, remote validation events, environmental testing, proving-ground activity, and other high-urgency support work

Qualifications
  • Team first mentality - as a multi-team manager in a highly cross-functional support role, you must be able to balance conflicting customer requests with team capabilities, develop and articulate timing plans and progress to stakeholders, all while growing a positive team culture.
  • Hands-on engineering capability across multiple vehicle systems, electrical integration, prototype hardware, and software-enabled development work, testing methods and instrumentation methodologies.
  • Experience and proven success operating within dynamic development timeline environments where rapid problem solving, self-direction, and results-driven flexibility are paramount.
  • Familiarity with Jira / Confluence workflows and documenting technical work clearly enough for cross-functional follow-through.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Software, Mechatronics, Aerospace, or similar engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years of automotive prototype, vehicle integration, validation testing and/or development engineering experience required.

Pay Disclosure

The salary range for this role is $153,300 - $191,600 for Arizona based applicants. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, shift, and organizational needs.

The successful candidate may be eligible for annual performance bonus and equity awards.

We offer a comprehensive package of benefits for full-time and part-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26, including but not limited to paid vacation, paid sick leave, and a competitive portfolio of insurance benefits including life, medical, dental, vision, short-term disability insurance, and long-term disability insurance to eligible employees. You may also have the opportunity to participate in Rivian’s 401(k) Plan and Employee Stock Purchase Program if you meet certain eligibility requirements. Full-time employee coverage is effective on their first day of employment. Part-time employee coverage is effective the first of the month following 90 days of employment.
