What is a remote automation test engineer?

A Remote Automation Test Engineer is a software professional who specializes in designing, developing, and executing automated tests to ensure the quality of software applications, while working from a location outside the traditional office environment. Their primary responsibilities include creating and maintaining automated test scripts, identifying bugs, and collaborating with development teams to resolve issues. They use various testing tools and frameworks to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of software testing, helping to deliver reliable and high-quality products. Remote work allows them to perform these tasks from anywhere, using digital communication and collaboration tools.

What does a remote automation test engineer do?

The job duties and responsibilities of a remote automation test engineer focus on quality assurance (QA). In this work from home role, you oversee the development of testing frameworks and maintain, debug, and operate automated testing systems on software to ensure that they meet technical requirements for the client or employers’ QA needs. In addition to taking steps to run and monitor each testing program from your remote location, you work to improve testing strategies and make updates to the testing frameworks when necessary.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote automation test engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Automation Test Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript), a solid understanding of software testing methodologies, and experience with test automation frameworks such as Selenium, Appium, or Cypress. Familiarity with CI/CD tools (like Jenkins or GitLab), version control systems (such as Git), and relevant certifications (e.g., ISTQB) are commonly expected. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with distributed teams and ensuring quality outcomes. These competencies are essential for identifying defects early, improving software reliability, and maintaining productivity in a remote work environment.

How does a remote automation test engineer typically collaborate with distributed development teams?

As a Remote Automation Test Engineer, you'll frequently interact with developers, product managers, and other QA professionals through virtual channels such as video calls, chat platforms, and project management tools. Effective collaboration often involves participating in daily stand-ups, sharing test results promptly, and providing feedback on code changes. Clear communication and documentation are key, as you'll need to ensure that everyone is aligned on testing priorities, defect statuses, and automation coverage. Embracing asynchronous communication and maintaining organized test artifacts help overcome challenges posed by working across different time zones.

What is the difference between Remote Automation Test Engineer vs Manual QA Tester?

The main difference between a Remote Automation Test Engineer and a Manual QA Tester lies in their testing approach. The automation engineer focuses on developing and maintaining automated test scripts, requiring programming skills and automation tools. In contrast, the manual tester executes test cases manually without automation. Both roles are essential in quality assurance, but they serve different functions within the testing process.

The Role
We're looking for a Software Engineer, Test Infrastructure (SETI) to help build the systems that keep our TypeScript codebase fast to test, easy to trust, and safe to ship. This is not your average Test / SETI role. You'll focus on developer experience, designing tools, frameworks, platform work and pipelines that elevate the productivity and confidence of engineers working across both frontend and backend systems. You'll build infrastructure that scales with our growing team, promotes engineering best practices, and catches problems before they reach production. You'll work closely with engineering teams across the organization to ensure our testing ecosystem supports rapid development while maintaining the high reliability and security standards required in financial services.
Your Impact
  • Design, build, and maintain robust tooling and testing infrastructure to support engineering workflows across our frontend and backend systems. Create comprehensive automation frameworks for unit, integration, and end-to-end testing, leveraging tools like Jest, Playwright, Vitest, and Cypress
  • Build intelligent CI/CD pipelines that run tests efficiently through advanced techniques like file-change tracking, smart test selection, and parallelization strategies
  • Develop sophisticated utilities for mocking APIs, stubbing external services, and spinning up isolated testing environments that mirror production conditions
  • Monitor test reliability and performance metrics to continuously drive improvements in feedback speed and signal quality across all engineering teams
  • Collaborate closely with engineers to ensure code is testable, traceable, and properly instrumented to build confidence in our deployments
  • Create comprehensive documentation and onboard teams to best practices in test architecture and optimized developer workflows
  • Drive key technical decisions for testing infrastructure that supports our critical trading systems and portfolio management platform
  • Establish testing standards and architectural patterns that enable rapid, confident product development across all our wealth management offerings
  • Partner with backend teams to build reusable test fixtures and data factories for complex financial workflows and regulatory scenarios
The Ideal Match
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience with a focus on testing infrastructure, developer tooling, or platform engineering
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript and modern testing frameworks (Jest, Vitest, Cypress, Playwright)
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar)
  • Experience with infrastructure as code (CDK, Datadog, Terraform, or similar)
  • Solid understanding of test automation patterns, mocking strategies, and test environment management
  • AWS Infra & Deployment experience
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration for test environments
  • Knowledge of database testing strategies and test data management
  • Strong foundation in software engineering principles and system design
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools for test infrastructure
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to debug complex testing issues
  • Strong written communication skills and documentation practices
Bonus Points
  • Experience with financial services or regulated industry testing requirements
  • Knowledge of property-based testing and fuzzing techniques
  • Experience with distributed testing and load testing frameworks
  • Familiarity with Scala or Python testing ecosystems
  • Background in building developer productivity tools
  • Experience with test reporting and analytics platforms
  • Knowledge of security testing and compliance validation
