What is a remote automation engineer?

A Remote Automation Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains automated systems and processes, often working from a remote location rather than on-site. They typically focus on creating scripts, tools, and workflows that help improve efficiency, quality, and reliability in software development, IT operations, or industrial processes. Their responsibilities may include writing code for test automation, configuring CI/CD pipelines, and collaborating with remote teams to optimize business operations. Working remotely allows them to support projects in various locations while leveraging digital communication and collaboration tools.

What does a remote automation engineer do?

A remote automation engineer uses technology to streamline, improve, and automate the manufacturing process. Your responsibilities in this work from home position include QA duties, testing software, developing computer systems, simulating programs, and using sensors to get accurate measurements. Your duties construct the automation processes of a specific manufacturing process. The different processes you work with govern the delivery and production of the process. You streamline processes for maximum efficiency without violating regulations or sacrificing the quality of products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote automation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Automation Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, scripting languages (such as Python or JavaScript), and automation frameworks, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, testing tools like Selenium or Jenkins, and certifications such as ISTQB or AWS Certified DevOps Engineer are often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and clear communication are critical soft skills for collaborating effectively in a distributed environment. These competencies ensure efficient automation processes, seamless integration, and successful remote teamwork in fast-paced technology projects.

How do remote automation engineers typically collaborate with on-site teams to ensure project success?

Remote Automation Engineers often work closely with on-site teams through regular video meetings, collaborative project management tools, and shared documentation platforms. Clear communication is key, as remote engineers may need to coordinate testing schedules, troubleshoot issues in real-time, and provide virtual support during equipment installation or updates. It's common to use remote desktop software and cloud-based environments to access systems securely. Proactive communication and responsiveness help bridge the distance, ensuring that automation projects stay on track and meet quality standards.

Job description

The roleย

As a Triage Automation Engineer at Wayve, you'll play a key role in scaling our Triage and Detectives workflow through process improvement, tooling, and automation. You'll partner with Triage Specialists and Detective Engineers to turn repeated, manual analysis into reliable, productised automation, including triage bots, behavioural classifiers, and workflow tooling. That reduces manual load and speeds up how quickly we identify, understand, and resolve issues across our test and on-road fleets.

This is a highly collaborative, detail-oriented role with a direct impact on the safety and efficiency of Wayve's development pipeline.

Key responsibilities:

  • Document and measure existing Triage and Detective workflows to identify opportunities for automation and process improvement
  • Prioritise improvements based on cost, benefit, impact, and feasibility
  • Partner with Detective Engineers to integrate their scripts and tools into scalable, productised workflows
  • Work with development, ML, and AI teams to deliver the tooling improvements Triage needs
  • Build automation pipelines - including triage bots and behavioural classifiers - that reduce manual load on Triage Specialists
  • Validate automation changes and outputs, including the accuracy and reliability of classifications and suggested root causes
  • Document newly implemented automations: what they do, how they work, how to use them, known limitations, and expected outputs
  • Measure and report on triage quality and throughput to track the impact of automation
  • Collaborate with senior management and cross-functional stakeholders to shape the roadmap for business-critical automation
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (including trips to our London office)
About youย ย

In order to set you up for success as a Triage Automation Engineer at Wayve, we're looking for the following skills and experience.ย ย

Essentialย

  • 3+ years of experience working with complex systems, ideally within robotics or autonomous vehicles
  • Strong scripting and analytical skills (e.g. Python, SQL, Bash/Shell)
  • Hands-on experience operating in a remote Linux environment
  • Experience building or maintaining data pipelines or notebooks (e.g. Databricks, Jupyter)
  • Great communication skills, able to explain complex technical problems to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Expertise using issue tracking and configuration management tools such as Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket/GitLab
  • Comfort with ambiguity - able to measure an existing workflow, identify where automation adds value, and scope a sensible solution

Desirableย

  • Experience with web development languages (e.g. HTML, CSS, React, Java) for building internal tooling
  • Practical experience with machine learning or classification models (e.g. PyTorch)
  • Experience with cloud services (ideally Microsoft Azure)
  • Passion for taking research ideas to production
  • Track record of promoting statistical rigour and experimental best practice
  • Experience working in a fast-moving tech company or startup

This is a full-time role based in our office in Sunnyvale.ย  At Wayve we want the best of all worlds so we operate a hybrid working policy that combines time together in our offices and workshops to fuel innovation, culture, relationships and learning, and time spent working from home. The reasonably estimated salary for this role ranges from $144,500-$183,200, plus a competitive equity package. Actual compensation is based on the candidate's skills, qualifications, and experience.
