Overview:
Our client is seeking an experienced Excel Automation Developer to support an ongoing enterprise financial systems project. This role will focus on enhancing and automating complex Excel-based journal entry forms used to prepare data for uploading into PeopleSoft.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience building Excel-based tools, creating custom ribbon buttons or macros, consolidating workbook data across multiple tabs, validating data formatting rules, and generating flat files for downstream system processing. This person does not need to be a full-stack developer, but they should be very strong with Excel, VBA, macros, data transformation, and flat file generation.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and enhance Excel-based forms used for journal entry processing.
  • Create custom Excel ribbon buttons or macro-enabled controls that allow users to export data from one tab or all tabs.
  • Automate the conversion of structured Excel data into flat file formats for downstream processing.
  • Consolidate multiple workbook tabs into a single output file containing required header and line detail records.
  • Build logic to support different journal entry types, including: $0 journal entries, project-related, journal entries, non-project journal entries.
  • Validate chart field values and ensure they meet required formatting and length standards, such as leading-zero formatting like 00001.
  • Ensure exported files meet required flat file layout specifications for staging table imports.
  • Support integration needs where exported files are imported into PeopleSoft through Java-based processes and staging tables.
  • Work with business stakeholders to refine requirements where formal documentation may be limited.
  • Troubleshoot Excel automation issues, file formatting issues, and data validation errors.
  • Support an ongoing enterprise project with iterative enhancements and long-term automation needs.

Required Skills and Experience:
  • Strong Microsoft Excel development experience.
  • Advanced VBA/macros experience.
  • Experience creating custom Excel ribbon buttons, toolbar actions, or user-triggered automation.
  • Experience converting Excel workbook data into flat files, CSV, TXT, or other structured output formats.
  • Strong understanding of workbook structures, multiple tabs, named ranges, formulas, and data validation.
  • Ability to consolidate data from multiple Excel tabs into a single file.
  • Experience working with header/detail file structures.
  • Strong data formatting and validation skills, including fixed-length fields, leading zeros, and required field lengths.
  • Ability to work independently from notes, business conversations, and limited formal documentation.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work directly with business users.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience with PeopleSoft Financials or ERP financial systems.
  • Experience with journal entry processing, general ledger data, or financial transaction files.
  • Experience creating files used for staging table imports.
