What is remote audio journalism?

Remote audio journalism involves reporting, producing, and editing audio content—such as podcasts or radio stories—while working from locations outside of a traditional newsroom or studio. Journalists in this field use digital tools to record interviews, edit audio, and collaborate with team members from anywhere with internet access. This approach allows for more flexibility in sourcing stories and reaching diverse contributors. Remote audio journalists must be skilled in both journalism and audio production, often managing their own equipment and software. The role is increasingly popular as technology enables high-quality audio work from home or in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote audio journalist?

To thrive as a Remote Audio Journalist, you need strong reporting, audio editing, and storytelling skills, typically supported by a background in journalism or communications. Familiarity with audio editing software such as Adobe Audition, Pro Tools, or Audacity, as well as experience using remote recording equipment, is essential. Excellent communication, time management, and the ability to work independently make someone stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for producing high-quality, compelling audio stories while collaborating effectively from a remote setting.

What are some common challenges faced by remote audio journalists, and how can they be addressed?

Remote audio journalists often encounter challenges such as coordinating interviews across time zones, maintaining high audio quality outside of a traditional studio, and fostering team communication when working remotely. To address these, it's helpful to use reliable scheduling tools, invest in portable recording equipment, and establish clear digital communication channels with editors and producers. Regular check-ins and collaborative platforms can also help ensure everyone stays connected and projects move smoothly.

Since 2020, TED Countdown has mobilized the world's boldest problem-solvers to accelerate
the solutions, stories, and partnerships needed to build a cleaner, healthier and fairer world for
all. We produce films, events, audio, and digital content that bring the world’s most valuable

accessibility, reach and transformative approach to ideas that TED is known for.

Job Description

The Role
We’re looking for a Supervising Producer to lead media production across the Countdown team.
This is a senior creative and operational role for a producer with great storytelling skills who can
navigate the full landscape of modern digital media — from short-form video to long-form
documentary to audio. You’ll be the connective tissue between our internal team and the
external producers, filmmakers, and creators we work with, ensuring everything we make is
sharp, purposeful, and built for the moment.

What You’ll Do
You’ll serve as the main point of contact for all media production across the Countdown team,
coordinating with internal stakeholders and external partners to keep projects on track and on
vision. You’ll lead creative development for films, videos, off-stage content, and audio — from
the earliest concept stage through final delivery. You’ll hire and manage third-party producers
and production companies, owning those relationships end to end. You’ll also manage creator-
led media partnerships for Countdown, supporting collaborations with individual creators and
production partners to expand our reach across platforms.

What We’re Looking For
You’re an experienced producer, video journalist or non-fiction filmmaker with a strong editorial
eye and a track record of telling complex stories clearly and compellingly. You understand how
content travels across platforms — YouTube, Instagram, podcast feeds, editorial sites — and
you know how to shape a story for each. You have enough fluency with climate and
environmental topics to move quickly in the space, and enough creative ambition to imagine
stories that haven’t been told yet. You are open- minded and curious - and keen to learn from
people with different perspectives.

You’re also a strong collaborator and a capable manager who can give and receive good notes,
hire the right people, and keep a production moving without losing the creative thread.

Qualifications

– 7–12 years of experience in video journalism, documentary production, or digital media
– Demonstrated experience leading or supervising production across multiple formats
– Strong editorial and storytelling instincts with a portfolio to back them up
– Experience managing external production partners and freelance talent
– Familiarity with climate, environment, or science journalism — either through direct
coverage or adjacent work
– Experience working across digital platforms and understanding of how content performs
in each
– We are headquartered in New York but open to remote or hybrid approaches, travel to
events and shoots will be required either way.
