AI Intern – DP&T

Location: Remote, USA
Department: Digital Products & Technology – Data Science & Engineering
Reports to: Senior Vice President, Technology & Data Science
FLSA: Non-exempt

Role Overview:

The AI Intern will support the Data Science & Engineering team in researching, prototyping, testing, and evaluating artificial intelligence solutions that advance the mission of Special Olympics. This role provides hands-on exposure to applied AI, machine learning, generative AI, analytics, and software development in a nonprofit environment.

The intern will collaborate with data scientists, engineers, product teams, and business stakeholders to explore innovative uses of AI that improve operational efficiency, enhance decision-making, expand digital accessibility, and create positive outcomes for athletes, coaches, volunteers, and staff. This position is designed to provide practical experience developing, evaluating, and deploying AI-enabled solutions while learning industry best practices in responsible AI, data governance, and technology delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research emerging AI, machine learning, and generative AI technologies and identify potential organizational applications.
  • Assist with proof-of-concept development and rapid prototyping of AI-enabled applications.
  • Assist in the development and testing of AI assistants, copilots, knowledge retrieval systems, and natural-language interfaces.
  • Support prompt engineering, evaluation, and optimization activities.
  • Help document AI workflows, technical designs, and implementation approaches.
  • Participate in user testing and feedback collection efforts.
  • Work closely with technical and non-technical stakeholders to understand business needs.
  • Present findings, recommendations, and project updates to team members.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and knowledge-sharing activities.
  • Contribute to documentation, presentations, and project deliverables.

Required Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student.
  • Familiarity with AI, machine learning, statistics, or data science concepts.
  • Familiarity with data analysis and visualization concepts.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated curiosity, initiative, and willingness to learn new technologies.
