Job description

Summary:

The Litigation Attorney serves as a strategic legal leader responsible for managing and resolving complex, high-exposure insurance matters, with a primary focus on long-tail liabilities such as asbestos, pollution, and abuse/molestation-related coverage issues. This role requires career focused, deep expertise in asbestos primarily, insurance coverage analysis and/or insurance defense, strong financial and strategic judgment, and the ability to manage sophisticated litigation portfolios. The position partners closely with internal leadership, reinsurance, finance, and external counsel to drive timely, commercially reasonable resolutions while protecting policyholder and affiliate interests.

What Youโ€™ll Do:
  • Develop and execute litigation and resolution strategies for complex, high-exposure insurance matters and categories of claims.
  • Lead coverage analysis and defense strategy for long-tail liabilities, including asbestos (primary focus), pollution, and sex-trafficking/molestation claims.
  • Provide legal counsel on novel theories of liability, thin-fact claims, and matters with outsized exposure risk.
  • Define and implement resolution plans informed by legal, financial, and actuarial analysis.
  • Oversee and manage outside counsel, including litigation strategy, budgets, and performance.
  • Coordinate discovery, motion practice, trial strategy, appeals, and settlement efforts.
  • Prepare high-quality reports analyzing facts, policy language, legal exposure, risk, and recommended strategy.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders across claims, reinsurance, finance, and executive leadership.
  • Ensure consistency in company positions across similar claim types and emerging trends.
  • Track legal developments and advise leadership on impacts to existing and future exposures.
  • Represent the organization externally, including coordination with co-carriers and other partners.
Experience Youโ€™ll Need:
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in any U.S. state or the District of Columbia.
  • 5+ years of asbestos, insurance coverage and/or insurance defense litigation experience; ~10 years strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with long-tail liabilities, with asbestos coverage analysis as the top priority. (Extensive Asbestos is a must)
  • Experience with pollution and abuse/molestation or sex-trafficking-related claims strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to manage complex, high-exposure litigation portfolios.
  • Strong legal writing, strategic judgment, and stakeholder communication skills.
  • Experience directing outside counsel and managing litigation budgets.
  • Financial or actuarial exposure analysis experience is a plus.
  • CPCU coursework or financial training preferred.
Why Join:
  • Senior-level role with meaningful influence on high-stakes litigation outcomes.
  • Opportunity to specialize in complex long-tail insurance exposures.
  • Flexible remote or hybrid work model based on location.
  • Competitive compensation with bonus potential.
  • Collaborative, high-integrity culture focused on disciplined strategy and continuous improvement.
