INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR - Subject Matter Expert - Arabic Language.

We are looking for a contract subject-matter expert to help revise a year-long Arabic 1 course for high school students. Candidates should be willing to participate in a live interview prior to being offered the role.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Read and review standards outlined in the Michigan Virtual Style Guide, including AI guidance, accessibility requirements, and course development best practices.
  • Complete required training with support from the Michigan Virtual Instructional Product Development team.
  • Review the existing two-semester Arabic 1 course and associated documents to become familiar with the course structure, objectives, instructional approach, and assessments.
  • Revise learning objectives and assessments as needed to improve measurability and alignment with applicable Michigan content standards.
  • Write rigorous, standards-aligned assessment scripts at both the lesson and unit levels that demonstrate depth of understanding and support diverse learners.
  • Review existing course links, videos, and instructional resources for functionality, accuracy, and relevance, and revise or replace them as needed.
  • Coordinate with the instructional designer, course development staff, and other project partners to address feedback and maintain consistency across both semesters.
  • Follow Michigan Virtual course development practices, templates, accessibility standards, and quality expectations throughout the project.

You will be supported by an instructional designer, instructional design manager and project manager. All new content created for this course will be written by the Subject Matter Expert, with any external sources and/or AI use cited in APA format in all deliverables.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERTISE

  • Content Writing Deliverables
  • Ability to write clear learning objectives
  • Ability to align learning objectives with Michigan State Standards
  • Ability to write comprehensive lesson content and assessments aligned to learning objectives for an asynchronous online experience
  • Fluent in both Arabic and English, both written and spoken

TIME COMMITMENT

  • This project is targeted to take 6-8 months from start to finish.
  • Expectation to commit to approximately 20 hours per week on average.
  • You will be asked to meet once a week with the instructional designer for approximately 1 hour during the hours of 9:00 am – 5:00 pm EST.
  • Must commit to a schedule and meet deadlines, but are free to work on your own time.
  • This is a remote, independent contractor position.

COMPENSATION

  • The project will be broken up into multiple milestones, which can be billed as completed throughout the project.
  • Total compensation: Approx $20,000.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience writing curriculum for or teaching at a high school level
  • Michigan World Language certification or equivalent
