Job description

The Sr. Appian Software Engineer will report to the Sr. Director, Salesforce and Marketing Technology in the Technology Department. This role is responsible for owning the technical direction, build quality, and delivery of Appian-based solutions supporting our Retirement & Wealth business, while acting as the hands-on lead for a team of Appian developers.

  • Serve as the primary technical lead for Appian applications supporting Retirement & Wealth business processes, workflows, and integrations.
  • Design, build, and maintain complex Appian applications, including process models, interfaces (SAIL), data fabric/records, integrations, decision rules, and expression rules.
  • Set and enforce Appian development standards, design patterns, and governance across the team to ensure consistent, scalable, and maintainable solutions.
  • Translate business requirements from Product Owners and stakeholders into technical designs, effort estimates, and delivery plans.
  • Partner with solution architects to design integrations between Appian and enterprise systems (e.g., Salesforce, SQL Server, REST/SOAP APIs, message queues) with attention to security, performance, and data integrity.
  • Lead technical design reviews and code reviews; ensure solutions align with enterprise architecture direction, security standards, and non-functional requirements (scalability, reliability, performance, maintainability).
  • Mentor and provide day-to-day technical guidance to Appian developers; support hiring, onboarding, and skill development on the team.
  • Partner with QA, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to define and maintain CI/CD pipelines for Appian package deployment across environments.
  • Own performance tuning, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis for production Appian applications; participate in incident response as needed.
  • Evaluate new Appian platform capabilities, plug-ins, and releases; make recommendations on adoption and upgrade planning.
  • Maintain technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, design decisions, and application inventories.
  • Communicate technical status, risks, and trade-offs clearly to senior leadership and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:

  • 2+ years in a technical lead or architect capacity, with direct responsibility for team output and design decisions
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent practical experience)
    • Preferred Certifications: Appian Certified Lead Developer (or equivalent Appian architect-level certification) and Appian Certified Senior Developer

Skills & Abilities:

  • Proven track record developing and delivering enterprise-scale, low-code applications in a regulated or financial services environment
  • Strong understanding of Appian environment management, application packaging, and deployment across Dev/Test/Prod
  • Experience integrating Appian with external systems via REST/SOAP APIs, databases, and enterprise middleware
  • Working knowledge of relational databases (SQL Server or similar) and data modeling
  • Familiarity with CI/CD practices and tools (e.g., Azure DevOps) as applied to Appian package deployment
  • Solid grasp of application security fundamentals: authentication, authorization, and data protection within Appian
  • Experience leading or mentoring a development team, including code review and technical coaching
  • Ability to translate ambiguous business requirements into clear technical designs and delivery plans
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-moving environment with competing priorities, balancing long-term architecture with short-term delivery needs
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical topics to senior leadership and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum delivery environments
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally with Product, QA, DevOps, and Infrastructure teams
