Theiagen is a thriving startup at an exciting stage of growth. Having developed organically, we are now seeking a structured approach to scale effectively. Theiagen is looking to add a Bioinformatics Analyst to our growing team. We are looking for a Bioinformatics Analyst to support development efforts to maintain and expand Theiagen's bioinformatics solutions, ensuring the core functionality and stability of our software used in pathogen genomics, under the direction of their Public Health Team Lead.
Key Responsibilities
Analytical Support
  • Assist in providing analytical support for external partners, overseeing activities to support genomic investigations (e.g., pathogen outbreaks), to ensure timely and effective solutions that address partner needs.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of Theiagen training workshops, supporting all aspects from material preparation to logistics and communication with external partners.
  • Contribute informed perspective to development initiatives, including experimental design to validate development work, conducting literature reviews, and thoroughly testing solutions.

Process Improvement
  • Ensure adherence to, and continuous improvement of, internal training and analytical support practices.

Communication and Collaboration
  • Regularly communicate with their Public Health Team Lead to summarize critical information, ensuring alignment on project statuses, challenges, and milestones for informed decision-making.

Learning and Mentorship
  • Seek mentorship from senior team members to develop skills and knowledge, while contributing to a culture of learning and technical excellence within the team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Bachelor's degree in bioinformatics, biostatistics, microbiology, molecular biology, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience applying bioinformatics tools and workflows to answer biological questions, particularly in pathogen genomics.
  • Proficiency in using standard bioinformatics tools for tasks such as NGS quality assessment, genome assembly, annotation, taxonomic classification, and antimicrobial resistance detection.
  • Basic knowledge of statistical approaches and bioinformatics pipelines for analyzing next-generation sequencing (NGS) data.
  • Familiarity with genomic epidemiology methods, such as MLST typing or outbreak investigation tools.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a collaborative team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Motivation and commitment to advancing public health.

Preferred Skills:
  • Familiarity with public health laboratory processes and workflows.
  • Experience interpreting results from bioinformatics workflows for actionable insights.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based bioinformatics platforms (e.g., Terra.bio, Galaxy) or workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Nextflow, WDL, or Snakemake).
  • Experience with visualization and reporting tools for presenting results.
  • Familiarity with shell scripting and working in UNIX/Linux environments.
