Remote Animal Science Research information

What is remote animal science research?

Remote animal science research involves conducting scientific studies on animals and their ecosystems using digital tools and technologies, often without being physically present in the field or laboratory. Researchers may use remote data collection methods such as satellite tracking, camera traps, virtual simulations, and online databases to gather and analyze information. This approach allows scientists to monitor animal behavior, health, and populations from a distance, increasing efficiency and minimizing human disturbance to wildlife. Remote animal science research is especially valuable for studying hard-to-reach or endangered species, and it often supports conservation efforts worldwide.

How does collaboration typically work for remote animal science research teams?

In remote animal science research roles, collaboration often relies on digital communication tools such as video conferences, shared databases, and cloud-based project management platforms. Researchers regularly coordinate with colleagues, data analysts, and sometimes field technicians to share findings, discuss methodologies, and plan experiments. While physical lab presence is limited, frequent virtual meetings and document sharing help maintain strong team cohesion and ensure project milestones are met. Building strong communication skills and being proactive in updates are key to successful collaboration in this remote setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote animal science research, and why are they important?

To excel in Remote Animal Science Research, you need a strong background in biology or animal science, research methodology, and data analysis, usually supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with statistical software (e.g., R, SPSS), GIS tools, and remote data collection platforms is typically required. Excellent written communication, critical thinking, and self-motivation are vital soft skills for collaborating virtually and managing independent projects. These skills ensure accurate data collection, insightful analysis, and effective teamwork, which are crucial for advancing scientific knowledge in remote research settings.

Research will be conducted in partnership with global customers (veterinary partners and pet owners), contract research organizations, universities, and internal facilities. The focus will be on product performance, differentiation, and delivering customer value across diverse markets.
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute clinical studies and outcomes research strategies that support the objectives of multiple Companion Animals brands across markets.
  • Design and implement pharmacoeconomic and outcomes research models to quantify the value proposition of Zoetis Companion Animals products globally.
  • Work with regional teams, Marketing, Technical Services, GMPS and GPM to ensure alignment of research with customer and market needs.
  • Support global lifecycle planning, ensuring Phase 4/OR principles are integrated into product development and post-launch strategies.
  • Publish and present research outputs internally (Sales, Marketing, Technical Services, Global teams) and externally (customers, industry meetings, publications).
  • Ensure dissemination of research results across markets, facilitating knowledge transfer and synergies.
  • Engage with global Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), universities, and contract research organizations to expand the scientific evidence base.

Education and Experience:
  • PhD, DVM, or MS in Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, Outcomes Research, Epidemiology, Health Economics, Public Health, or a related quantitative field; companion animal focus strongly preferred
  • Advanced training in epidemiology and biostatistics (e.g., causal inference, longitudinal/mixed models, survival analysis) is strongly preferred
  • Proven track record designing and executing outcomes and real world evidence studies in companion animals (e.g., comparative effectiveness, PRO/HRQoL, adherence, utilization), including economic analyses and decision modeling
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in companion animal health or outcomes research, ideally with multi market or global exposure and collaboration with clinics, referral centers, or practice networks
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific and economic findings into clear, customer focused insights for veterinarians, practice owners, payers/insurers, and internal stakeholders
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with experience presenting to diverse audiences (clinical, medical, commercial, regulatory), including publication and conference presentations
  • Experience working with companion animal data sources (EMR/PIMS, insurance claims, registries), data quality assessment, and privacy/ethics compliance preferred
  • Proficiency in study design, principles of statistical analysis and reproducible analytics; familiarity with survey design and patient (owner) reported outcomes is a plus
  • Proven expertise in scientific writing, including the ability to synthesize complex information and collaborate on the development of research papers, protocols, and project summaries.
  • Proven cross functional collaboration with Medical/VMRD, Commercial, and Regulatory teams to align evidence with value messages and decision needs.

Technical Skills Requirements:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel) for executive-ready deliverables and data summaries
  • Broad knowledge of companion animal health across species (canine, feline), clinical practice workflows (general practice vs referral), and prevalent conditions impacting outcomes and quality of life
  • Statistical analysis expertise (R, Python, SAS, or other softwares) strongly preferred, including design and analysis of observational studies and pragmatic trials
  • Health economics and outcomes research methods (cost effectiveness/budget impact modeling, PRO/HRQoL measurement, utility elicitation, causal inference) with application to companion animal contexts
  • Experience with companion animal data sources (PIMS/EMR from veterinary practices, insurance claims, registries) and data engineering basics for cohort building and data quality assessment
  • Advanced modeling skills: generalized linear/mixed models, survival/time to event analyses, longitudinal/clustered data methods (e.g., mixed effects), and sensitivity analyses
  • Data visualization and communication: ability to build clear, persuasive charts/dashboards (e.g., ggplot, matplotlib, Power BI/Tableau) and translate statistical results for clinical and business audiences
  • Reproducible analytics and governance: version control, documentation and audit ready outputs; familiarity with privacy/ethical standards for veterinary data.

Physical Position Requirements:
  • Ability to work effectively in a global, matrixed environment across functions and geographies
  • Flexibility to manage research projects with variable timelines and regional needs
  • International travel (20-30%, variable)
  • Ability to work in a home office environment with reliable high speed internet and a confidential workspace suitable for handling sensitive data
