Remote Animal Health Inspector information

What is a remote animal health inspector?

Remote Animal Health Inspectors are professionals who monitor, assess, and ensure the health and welfare of animals in agricultural, veterinary, or wildlife settings—often using digital tools and technology to perform their work from a distance. They may review reports, oversee compliance with animal health regulations, conduct virtual inspections, and provide guidance to animal owners or facilities. Their role is essential in preventing disease outbreaks, maintaining food safety, and supporting animal welfare, even when on-site visits are limited. The position often requires knowledge of animal health standards, regulatory compliance, and strong communication skills to work effectively in a remote environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote animal health inspector?

To thrive as a Remote Animal Health Inspector, you need a background in veterinary science or animal husbandry, knowledge of animal health regulations, and relevant certifications such as USDA accreditation. Familiarity with digital inspection tools, remote monitoring systems, and documentation software is typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help inspectors conduct thorough assessments and provide clear recommendations. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring animal welfare, regulatory compliance, and accurate reporting in a remote work environment.

How do remote animal health inspectors typically communicate and collaborate with on-site staff to ensure effective inspections?

Remote Animal Health Inspectors often rely on video calls, digital reporting tools, and cloud-based document sharing to coordinate with on-site personnel. They provide guidance, review live or recorded footage, and request specific data or samples as needed to complete thorough assessments. Building strong communication channels and fostering trust with on-site teams are essential to overcoming challenges posed by remote work, such as time zone differences or limited access to physical evidence. Regular virtual meetings and clear protocols help ensure that inspections remain accurate and efficient.

Berkshire Hathaway GUARD Insurance Companies is seeking an experienced Loss Control Consultant to support and manage a portfolio of Workers' Compensation accounts ranging from $50K to $500K in guaranteed-cost premium. This role partners closely with underwriting and policyholders to evaluate risk, reduce losses, and support account retention and growth.

You'll serve as a trusted advisor-helping clients improve workplace safety while delivering insights that support sound underwriting decisions.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct onsite, virtual, and telephonic risk evaluations for Workers' Compensation accounts
  • Identify workplace hazards, unsafe practices, and operational risks that could lead to employee injuries
  • Analyze OSHA 300 logs, claims history, and related data to identify trends and loss drivers
  • Perform job hazard analyses, ergonomic reviews, and root cause investigations
  • Understand exposures across industries such as construction, manufacturing, healthcare, trucking, hospitality, and agriculture

  • When needed, assess basic Property and General Liability exposures on multi-line accounts

Advise and Partner

  • Translate evaluation findings into actionable, prioritized, and time-bound recommendations for the policyholder and underwriters.
  • Work directly with policyholders to build, improve, or refine safety plans and basic loss prevention practices appropriate for their operations.
  • Partner with underwriting and territory managers to identify safety issues and demonstrate service capabilities for new business acquisitions and renewals.
  • Provide actionable oversight of Loss Control inspection vendors, including quality review of vendor work and reports to ensure standards are met.

Share and Inform

  • Support broader loss control efforts such as targeted safety communications, educational outreach, or loss control campaigns addressing common loss drivers across the Workers' Compensation book.
  • Provide input on recurring trends and exposures to help inform proactive, booklevel loss prevention initiatives.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of Workers' Compensation loss control or safety experience with an insurance carrier
  • Knowledge of workplace hazards, injury trends, and OSHA requirements
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to apply sound judgement when evaluating risk
  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Risk Management, Occupational Health, or a related field
  • Valid driver's license with ability to travel for onsite surveys as needed
  • Safety or insurance designations (ASP, ARM, CSP) preferred
While this role carries a preference for in-office work, we will consider remote arrangements for qualified candidates who reside outside of a commutable distance to one of our offices.
