Job description

Staff Frontend Engineer (Payments & Checkout)

Are you passionate about solving complex challenges in the fintech space? We're looking for a Staff Frontend Engineer (Payments & Checkout) to join our dynamic startup, backed by Sequoia Capital. We're building the universal payment layer to unify all currencies - fiat and crypto - so businesses and consumers can transact seamlessly.

In this role, you'll own and evolve our checkout and payment experience - the most critical surface of our product. You'll work closely with product, design, growth, and backend teams to build fast, seamless, and high-converting payment flows. From reducing friction to improving authorization rates, your work will directly impact revenue and user experience. If you thrive on optimizing user journeys and love building performant, elegant frontend systems, we'd love to chat.

What You'll Do:
  • Checkout ownership - Own the end-to-end frontend architecture for our checkout and payment flows across web platforms
  • Conversion optimization - Improve checkout conversion rates through UX improvements, performance tuning, and data-driven experimentation
  • Experimentation - Partner with product and growth to run A/B tests, analyze funnel performance, and ship iterative improvements quickly
  • Payment UX - Build seamless flows for complex payment states including retries, failures, and authentication (3DS, etc.)
  • Performance - Optimize frontend performance (Core Web Vitals, latency, rendering) to ensure fast and reliable checkout experiences
  • Integration - Collaborate with backend and payments teams to integrate APIs, PSPs, and orchestration layers
  • Resilience - Build robust UI systems that gracefully handle edge cases and ensure high reliability during transactions
  • Frontend standards - Define and drive best practices for frontend architecture, scalability, and maintainability
  • Mentorship - Act as a technical leader and mentor, raising the bar across the frontend team
  • Culture carrier - Bring strong product thinking and a conversion-focused mindset into engineering decisions
What We're Looking For:
  • 7+ years of frontend engineering experience, ideally in fast-paced or startup environments
  • Deep hands-on experience building and optimizing checkout or payment flows (must-have)
  • Strong proficiency in modern frontend frameworks (React, Next.js, etc.)
  • Experience improving conversion rates through experimentation, analytics, and UX iteration
  • Strong understanding of frontend performance optimization and rendering strategies
  • Familiarity with payments infrastructure (Stripe, Adyen, Braintree, tokenization, 3DS, etc.)
  • Strong product intuition and ability to translate data into user experience improvements
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills across product, design, and growth teams
  • Experience with global payments, multi-currency flows, or crypto is a bonus
Our Culture:
  • Fast-paced and dynamic - We're a growing startup that moves quickly
  • Tech-driven - We leverage technology to address our users' biggest challenges
  • Ownership and communication - We value people who take full ownership and communicate well across teams
  • Continuous learning - You'll work alongside industry experts and deepen your expertise in payments and high-performance frontend systems
Why Join Us:
  • Competitive salary + equity plan
  • 21 days PTO
  • Benefits: annual medical allowance, productivity budget, gym membership & wellness subsidy
  • Annual team retreat trip
  • Be part of a team backed by Sequoia Capital with a healthy runway
Requirements:
  • 7+ years of experience in frontend engineering, with a focus on high-impact user-facing systems
  • Proficient in modern frontend frameworks and performance optimization techniques
  • Experience with experimentation, analytics, and conversion-focused development
  • Strong understanding of building reliable, scalable UI systems
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
  • We are unable to sponsor visas at this time.
  • Preferred: Ability to work hybrid in NYC; open to remote candidates for the right individual
