What does a Remote Android Developer do?

A Remote Android Developer is a software engineer who designs, develops, tests, and maintains applications for devices running the Android operating system, all while working from a remote location outside of a traditional office environment. Their responsibilities include writing clean and efficient code, collaborating with team members via online tools, and troubleshooting bugs. Job description

Description

Join our winning team, recently honored on Forbes' list of America's Best Startup Employers!

The Helper Bees (THB) was created to fill an obvious need in an underserved community. Inspired by love and brought to reality through passion and determination, The Helper Bees was founded to empower older adult citizens and their families in their search for quality, affordable in-home care providers. We do this by providing older adults the ability to easily review, choose, and access affordable quality in-home helpers.

The Helper Bees mission is to help people stay home longer through data-driven services that transform both the payer and the care-recipient experience.

At THB, we define our company culture through our Core Values:

  • Quickly iterate through solutions - We move at a fast pace which requires quick iterations to find a path to a repeatable solution
  • Seek ways to create immediate impact - Be thoughtful and proactive in how you make an impact on your team. Actively look for ways to make a fast, positive impact.
  • Bee the teammate you want to work with - We work as a team, help each other and encourage each other
  • Ask questions, answer questions - You can't iterate through solutions if you don't ask the right questions which is why there is an expectation that questions should be asked. When you know the answer, being a good teammate means chiming in to get others up to speed.

Take the time to celebrate wins - It's so easy for a team that is heads down to forget about all the great things they've accomplished. That's why we make it a priority to remind ourselves to create space to celebrate wins, big or small.

Job Summary:

As a Software Engineer, You will join one of our product squads-a small, durable team of engineers, a product manager, and a designer aligned to a specific customer or business outcome (payer experience, care-recipient experience, provider tooling, or our data platform). You will own meaningful slices of the product end-to-end: framing the problem with your squad, designing the solution, shipping it, and measuring whether it actually moved the metric you set out to move.

As a Software Engineer, we expect you to set technical direction inside your squad, raise the bar across our codebases, and grow the engineers around you through example and mentorship.

Requirements

 Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with your PM and designer to transform ambiguous challenges into fully instrumented, production-ready software.
  • Drive technical design for squad-led initiatives-drafting documentation, evaluating trade-offs, and steering the final decision.
  • Develop and maintain production-grade systems across our web platforms, mobile applications, and third-party integrations.
  • Troubleshoot complex, cross-system issues with a balanced approach of curiosity and composure.
  • Continuously elevate our engineering standards through rigorous code reviews, proactive refactoring, and enhanced tooling.
  • Leverage AI tools (such as Cursor, Copilot, and Claude) as a force multiplier and help define team protocols for their effective use.
  • Investigate practical applications for AI, ranging from internal workflow automation to features that enhance the member care experience.
  • Guide the engineers around you, ensuring the team is stronger and more capable through your mentorship.

Performance Metrics:

  • Outcome Impact: Deliver measurable results for your squad by focusing on the most critical user and business problems.
  • Technical Leadership: Influence technical strategy within your squad through design docs and code, shaping trade-offs early in the process.
  • Code Quality: Write code that is testable and maintainable-whether human or AI-assisted-while holding the team to high standards.
  • Problem Solving: Resolve intricate, cross-system technical challenges with a calm and methodical troubleshooting approach.
  • AI Leverage: Utilize AI tools to enhance velocity and quality, contributing to the team's evolving standards for oversight.
  • Mentorship: Actively grow the engineering talent around you through Pairing, feedback, and thoughtful code reviews.
  • Trust: Build strong partnerships with product and design through reliable delivery and sound professional judgment.

How we work:

  • Durable, small squads (PM, designer, 3-4 engineers) with full ownership of their roadmap and outcomes.
  • High-velocity delivery utilizing trunk-based development, feature flags, and frequent weekly deployments.
  • An experimental culture where we explore and define the best practices for AI-assisted engineering together.
  • A balanced, light on-call rotation dedicated to maintaining squad-owned services.
  • A remote-first environment across the U.S. supported by intentional, periodic travel for team alignment.

What you'll bring:

  • Substantial experience (typically 5+ years) building production software in cross-functional teams where you own outcomes end-to-end.
  • Strong product instinct - You prioritize the user experience as much as the code and know when a problem isn't worth the investment.
  • The ability to navigate ambiguity and the judgment to determine when to ship, when to iterate, and when to decline.
  • Clear writing and communication - You can articulate complex trade-offs to product managers and junior engineers with equal clarity.
  • Experience with the following (or equivalents): Python, Django, DRF, Celery, Postgres, and React.
  • A genuine curiosity regarding AI tools and their impact on development; you use them regularly and have informed opinions on their trajectory.
  • Bonus points if you have experience with: GCP, Airflow, Docker, React Native, LLMs, or domain expertise in regulated healthcare (HIPAA) environments.
  • A deep sense of ownership and a drive to collaborate, learn, and improve the systems and people around you.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • You enjoy collaborating and are not afraid to ask for/give help
  • You are proactive, self-directed, and organized
  • You thrive in working in a fast pace start-up environment
  • Change doesn't scare you, in fact, it does the opposite -- it fuels you!
  • Must be 18 years of age or older

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to remain at your designated workstation for the duration of the workday
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a phone and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • The ability to observe details at close range (typically on a computer screen)

This position offers the flexibility of remote work at approved locations within the United States. Candidates must have a reliable internet connection and a designated work environment conducive to professional phone calls and sensitive data. Enjoy the convenience and comfort of working remotely while contributing to our team's success.
