Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to lead engineering assessments, diagnostics, and lifecycle management for power transformers across our utility and industrial project portfolio. This role owns technical evaluations from 5 MVA distribution units through 500+ MVA power transformers, drives advanced testing and root cause failure analysis, and provides engineering oversight at client sites nationwide. The ideal candidate combines deep transformer applications expertise with the judgment to mentor junior engineers and the credibility to coordinate directly with utilities, OEMs, EPC contractors, and commissioning teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead engineering assessments and diagnostics for power transformers ranging from 5 MVA to 500+ MVA, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.

• Perform and interpret advanced transformer testing, including Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA), Power Factor Testing, and Insulation Resistance Testing.

• Develop comprehensive technical reports and repair recommendations based on thorough engineering evaluations.

• Conduct root cause failure analyses and provide refurbishment recommendations to extend transformer lifespan.

• Review and approve engineering drawings, test plans, and work instructions to ensure compliance with IEEE and NETA standards.

• Travel to client facilities nationwide to provide engineering oversight and technical guidance on transformer projects.

• Partner with project managers and operations leaders to deliver projects on schedule and within scope.

• Mentor junior engineers on transformer applications, testing methodologies, and reliability engineering practices.

• Support utility interconnection projects involving substation transformers, collector substations, and renewable generation facilities.

• Evaluate transformer protection systems, differential relays, overcurrent protection, and system coordination requirements.

• Develop transformer replacement and modernization strategies for aging infrastructure.

• Coordinate engineering activities with utilities, OEMs, EPC contractors, and commissioning teams.

• Drive transformer asset performance improvements through advanced diagnostics and condition-based maintenance initiatives.

• Ensure compliance with IEEE, NETA, utility standards, and transformer industry best practices.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (or related field) from an accredited university.

• 8+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience, with a strong focus on power transformers.

• Demonstrated expertise in transformer diagnostics, including DGA, Power Factor Testing, Insulation Resistance Testing, and Turns Ratio Testing.

• Hands-on experience with root cause failure analysis and transformer refurbishment/replacement recommendations.

• Working knowledge of transformer protection systems – differential relays, overcurrent protection, and system coordination.

• Experience supporting utility interconnection projects, substation transformers, and renewable generation facilities.

• Strong knowledge of IEEE and NETA standards; familiarity with NEC requirements.

• Proven ability to review and approve engineering drawings, test plans, and work instructions.

• Experience mentoring or leading junior engineers.

• Willingness to travel to client sites nationwide.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT).

• Background in short circuit analysis, load flow studies, and substation engineering.

• Experience coordinating with OEMs, EPC contractors, and commissioning teams on transformer projects.

• Familiarity with tap changers (OLTC), bushings, and insulation systems.

• Professional Engineer (PE) license.

Skills

Transformers & Applications: Power transformers, distribution transformers, transformer diagnostics, DGA, condition assessment, reliability engineering, oil analysis, insulation systems, bushings, tap changers (OLTC).

Testing & Commissioning: Transformer testing, FAT, SAT, commissioning, NETA testing.

Systems & Studies: Short circuit analysis, load flow studies, protection & control, utility power systems, substation engineering, IEEE standards, root cause analysis, asset management.
