Job description

PhD Electrical Engineer, Power Electronics Intern

Position Summary

Aegis Power Systems is seeking a highly motivated PhD Power Electronics Intern to support advanced research and development of next-generation power conversion technologies. This internship will provide the opportunity to contribute directly to the development of a new power converter solution, working alongside experienced electrical, firmware, and systems engineers.

The intern will participate in the design, development, modeling, implementation, and testing of power converter technologies, with a particular focus on control hardware, embedded firmware, control software, and power conversion performance.

This position is ideal for a PhD student conducting advanced research in power electronics, power conversion, controls, or a closely related field who is interested in applying academic research to real-world aerospace, defense, and high-reliability power systems.

This position is USA REMOTE

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the research and development of a new, advanced power converter solution.
  • Develop and evaluate power converter control architectures and algorithms.
  • Design, prototype, and test control hardware and associated electronic circuitry.
  • Develop embedded firmware and software used for converter control, monitoring, communication, and data acquisition.
  • Model and simulate power electronic converter topologies, control loops, and system performance.
  • Perform control-loop analysis, stability analysis, and system optimization.
  • Support selection and evaluation of power semiconductor devices, magnetic components, sensors, and other critical components.
  • Develop laboratory prototypes and support hardware bring-up and debugging.
  • Conduct experimental testing to validate converter efficiency, transient response, thermal performance, stability, and overall system performance.
  • Analyze test and simulation data and recommend design improvements.
  • Troubleshoot complex interactions between power hardware, control electronics, firmware, and software.
  • Document designs, simulations, test procedures, results, and technical findings.
  • Prepare and present technical results and design recommendations to engineering leadership.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, firmware, manufacturing, and systems engineering teams throughout the development process.

Qualifications

Required

  • Currently pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Power Engineering, Controls, or a closely related discipline.
  • Graduate-level research or project experience in power electronics and power conversion.
  • Strong understanding of power converter topologies and switching power supplies.
  • Knowledge of feedback control systems, digital control, and control-loop design.
  • Experience with power electronics modeling and simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, LTspice, PSpice, or similar tools.
  • Experience developing or working with embedded control systems, microcontrollers, DSPs, or FPGAs.
  • Ability to work effectively in a laboratory environment with power electronics hardware and test equipment.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and technical documentation skills.

Preferred

  • Research experience involving DC-DC, AC-DC, DC-AC, or bidirectional power conversion.
  • Experience with high-frequency and/or high-power converter design.
  • Experience with SiC or GaN wide-bandgap semiconductor technologies.
  • Experience developing digital power-control algorithms.
  • Programming experience with C/C++, Python, MATLAB, or similar languages.
  • Experience with DSP, FPGA, or real-time control platforms.
  • Experience with software-in-the-loop (SIL) simulation.
  • Knowledge of magnetics design, EMI/EMC considerations, thermal management, and power-converter efficiency optimization.
  • Experience taking a power electronics design from simulation through prototype development and laboratory validation.
  • Previous research, internship, or project experience related to aerospace, defense, automotive, industrial, or other high-reliability power systems.

Internship Experience

The PhD Power Electronics Intern will have the opportunity to work on a technically challenging development program with direct exposure to the complete power electronics development lifecycle. From concept and modeling through controls development, hardware/firmware integration, prototype testing, and design validation.

The intern's research and technical contributions will support the development of new power conversion capabilities for demanding, high-reliability applications.
