Remote Aircraft Certification Engineer information

What is a remote aircraft certification engineer?

A Remote Aircraft Certification Engineer is a specialized professional who works, often from a remote location, to ensure that aircraft and their components meet all necessary regulatory and safety standards for certification. They are responsible for reviewing designs, testing procedures, and documentation to confirm compliance with aviation authorities, such as the FAA or EASA. These engineers collaborate with manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders to guide aircraft through the certification process, often using digital tools and remote communication. Their work is critical in ensuring the safety and airworthiness of new and modified aircraft.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote aircraft certification engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Aircraft Certification Engineer, you need a solid background in aerospace engineering, regulatory compliance knowledge (such as FAA or EASA standards), and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with certification management tools, CAD software, and document management systems is crucial, along with certifications like DER or similar credentials. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this field. These skills are vital to ensure aircraft safety, regulatory compliance, and successful collaboration across remote teams and regulatory bodies.

How does a remote aircraft certification engineer typically collaborate with regulatory authorities and internal teams during the certification process?

As a Remote Aircraft Certification Engineer, collaboration with regulatory authorities—such as the FAA or EASA—and internal engineering teams is primarily conducted through virtual meetings, detailed documentation exchanges, and regular progress updates. You’ll coordinate test plans, compliance reports, and design data, ensuring all communication is clear and timely despite not being physically present. Strong digital communication skills and the ability to proactively address questions or concerns are essential, as you often serve as the main liaison between your company and certifying bodies. This remote setup can pose challenges in building rapport, but it also offers flexibility and the opportunity to work with diverse, geographically dispersed teams.

What is the difference between Remote Aircraft Certification Engineer vs Remote Aerospace Systems Engineer?

AspectRemote Aircraft Certification EngineerRemote Aerospace Systems Engineer
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, FAA/EASA certifications, type ratingsEngineering degree, systems engineering certifications, project management skills
Work EnvironmentRegulatory agencies, certification bodies, aerospace manufacturersDesign teams, systems integration, testing facilities
Industry UsageAircraft certification, safety compliance, regulatory approvalSystem design, integration, performance analysis

The Remote Aircraft Certification Engineer primarily focuses on obtaining regulatory approval and ensuring aircraft meet safety standards, often working closely with certification authorities. In contrast, the Remote Aerospace Systems Engineer concentrates on designing and integrating aerospace systems, emphasizing technical development and performance. Both roles require engineering expertise but differ in their core responsibilities and work environments.

We believe aircraft should fly themselves. Automated aviation systems will enable a future where air transportation is safer, more convenient, and fundamentally transformative to the way goods - and eventually people - move around the planet. We are a team of mission-driven engineers with experience across aerospace, robotics, and self-driving cars working to make this future a reality.
As a Sr. FPGA Certification Engineer at Reliable Robotics, you will be a part of the FPGA team which owns the firmware at the heart of our phased array radar. Phased array radar systems have historically been reserved for specialized applications, but we're making this technology affordable to enable Detect and Avoid for widespread commercial applications. The passion for revolutionary technology to make aviation safer motivates us to come in every day.
Responsibilities
In your role as a Sr. FPGA Certification Engineer, you will be responsible for the entire certification lifecycle of the FPGA. You will author DO-254 plans and standards, develop compliant processes for peer review and testing, perform qualification of relevant design and verification tools, and develop strategies for efficient verification of the product. You will guide verification through execution and coordinate certification activities with the FAA and relevant DERs. Your contributions will directly enable the efficient realization of safe and dependable airborne electronic hardware at Reliable Robotics.
Basic Success Criteria
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
  • 10+ years of full-cycle aviation electronics hardware development experience
  • Experience with safety-critical FPGA certification in a DO-254 level A/B process
  • Professional experience designing and/or verifying FPGA digital logic using industry-standard design, simulation, and synthesis tools

Preferred Criteria
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience working with RADAR or RF transceivers
  • Proven track record of product ownership including development and field support
  • Comfortable with a fast-paced, agile/iterative development life cycle
  • Pragmatic, results-oriented work style
