What is a remote aerospace software engineer?

A Remote Aerospace Software Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software used in aerospace systems, such as aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, and related technologies, while working from a location outside of a traditional office setting. These engineers collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure software meets the rigorous safety and performance standards required in the aerospace industry. They often use specialized programming languages and tools to create embedded systems, simulation software, or control systems, contributing to the advancement of aerospace technology from anywhere in the world.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote aerospace software engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Aerospace Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, aerospace engineering principles, and proficiency in programming languages like C++, Python, or Ada, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with aerospace industry standards, real-time operating systems, and tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, and version control systems is essential, and certifications like DO-178C may be required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, self-motivation, and effective remote communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating across distributed teams. These skills and qualities ensure the development of reliable, safe, and compliant aerospace software systems while maintaining productivity in a remote work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote aerospace software engineers and how can they be addressed?

Remote aerospace software engineers often encounter challenges related to communication and collaboration, given the highly technical and regulated nature of aerospace projects. Coordinating with multidisciplinary teams across different time zones can require extra effort in scheduling meetings and ensuring everyone stays aligned on project milestones. To overcome these challenges, it's important to establish clear communication channels, leverage collaborative development tools, and maintain thorough documentation. Regular virtual check-ins and proactive status updates also help ensure smooth progress, compliance, and integration with hardware teams.

What is the difference between Remote Aerospace Software Engineer vs Remote Aerospace Systems Engineer?

AspectRemote Aerospace Software EngineerRemote Aerospace Systems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field; experience in aerospace software developmentBachelor's in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related; knowledge of aerospace systems and integration
Work EnvironmentPrimarily software development, coding, testing in remote settingsSystems integration, requirements analysis, and coordination across hardware and software components remotely
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by aerospace companies developing flight software, satellite systems, UAVsUsed in aerospace firms managing complex systems, spacecraft, and satellite projects

The main difference is that Remote Aerospace Software Engineers focus on developing and testing aerospace software remotely, while Remote Aerospace Systems Engineers handle system integration and requirements across hardware and software components. AFSIM Modeler/Software Engineer

Worldscape Technology Inc.

Redmond, WA โ€ข On-site, Remote

Job description

Worldscape is a cutting-edge platform designed to unify distributed data, sensors, and intelligent agents across cloud, on-prem, and edge environments. By combining geospatial intelligence, physics-based 3D simulation, and reward-driven AI, Worldscape enables organizations to build immersive digital twins for predictive modeling, scenario planning, and adaptive decision-making. With a zero-trust security framework, seamless integration with legacy systems, and robust developer tools, Worldscape empowers rapid deployment of agentic applications that drive resilience and efficiency in sectors like logistics, telecom, defense, and infrastructure.

We are building a breakthrough platform for next-generation geospatial intelligence and defense applications, and we're looking for an AFSIM Modeler/Software Engineer to help extend our simulation and analytics capabilities. In this role, you'll bring hands-on experience with AFSIM (Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling) to help develop mission-level analytics, simulation models, and integrations within a modern software environment. You'll work at the intersection of simulation, software engineering, and aerospace systems, using your understanding of established mission modeling frameworks while helping apply that expertise to next-generation simulation environments.

This is a hands-on engineering role. We're looking for someone who enjoys writing code, solving complex technical problems, and building simulation capabilities. You don't need to be a senior defense analyst or program lead; we're looking for strong technical fundamentals and practical AFSIM experience.

Location: Redmond, WA preferred; remote candidates will be considered for the right fit.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop, configure, and maintain AFSIM models and simulation scenarios representing complex aerospace and defense systems.
  • Design and implement models for aircraft, weapons, sensors, communications, electronic warfare, and other mission systems.
  • Develop software, scripts, and tooling to extend AFSIM capabilities and automate simulation workflows.
  • Build reusable modeling components and infrastructure that can support multiple simulation scenarios and use cases.
  • Translate system requirements, technical specifications, and operational concepts into robust simulation models.
  • Integrate models and software components into larger simulation environments.
  • Run simulations, debug model behavior, investigate unexpected results, and improve model fidelity and performance.
  • Develop automated workflows for scenario generation, simulation execution, data collection, and results processing.
  • Analyze simulation outputs to validate model behavior and identify opportunities to improve the underlying implementation.
  • Collaborate closely with software engineers, systems engineers, and subject-matter experts to ensure models accurately represent real-world systems.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, testing, and documentation.
  • Help establish best practices for AFSIM development, testing, version control, and reusable model architecture.
Professional Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of hands-on AFSIM experience, including developing or modifying models and scenarios.
  • Strong software development skills in C++, Python, or a similar programming language.
  • Experience building or working with simulation models, ideally involving aerospace, defense, robotics, autonomous systems, or other complex technical systems.
  • Ability to read and understand existing code and simulation architectures and make meaningful modifications independently.
  • Experience debugging complex software or simulation behavior and systematically identifying the underlying cause.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including version control, testing, debugging, and code quality.
  • Ability to translate real-world system behavior and technical requirements into software and simulation models.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Operations Research, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience integrating AFSIM with other simulation, modeling, analytics, or software environments.
  • Experience developing custom AFSIM plugins, models, or extensions.
  • Experience with AFSIM's modeling architecture, interfaces, or APIs.
  • Experience with aircraft, weapons, sensors, ISR, electronic warfare, communications, or air combat systems.
  • Experience modeling crewed and uncrewed platforms.
  • Experience with simulation automation, scenario generation, Monte Carlo analysis, or large-scale simulation runs.
  • Experience with Linux-based development environments and Git.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering, mission-level analysis, or operations analysis.
  • Experience working in classified environments.
Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, and qualifications. In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for performance-based bonuses and equity awards.
