How much do remote aerospace engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 19, 2026, the average yearly pay for remote aerospace engineering in Arab, AL is $98,329.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $80,100.00 and $119,900.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is remote aerospace engineering?

Remote aerospace engineering involves performing aerospace engineering tasks—such as designing, analyzing, testing, and managing aerospace systems—from a location outside of a traditional office or laboratory, typically via digital collaboration tools. Remote aerospace engineers may work on aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, or related systems and often use specialized software to simulate and analyze designs. This setup enables flexibility and access to global talent while maintaining high standards of security and communication. Many aerospace companies now offer remote or hybrid positions in response to advances in technology and changing workplace trends.

How do remote aerospace engineers effectively collaborate with on-site teams during complex projects?

Remote aerospace engineers typically use a variety of digital tools—such as video conferencing, collaborative CAD platforms, and project management software—to stay connected with on-site teams. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation help ensure everyone is aligned on project milestones and technical requirements. While working remotely can pose challenges, such as limited access to physical prototypes or lab equipment, strong communication skills and proactive scheduling of virtual check-ins help bridge the gap. Many organizations also facilitate occasional in-person visits for critical design reviews or testing phases to maintain seamless collaboration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote aerospace engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Aerospace Engineer, you need a strong background in aerospace engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in aerospace engineering or a related field. Proficiency in CAD software (like CATIA or SolidWorks), simulation tools (such as MATLAB or ANSYS), and familiarity with industry standards are crucial, along with certifications like a Professional Engineer (PE) license being advantageous. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help remote engineers collaborate effectively and stay productive without direct supervision. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering innovative, accurate solutions and ensuring successful project outcomes in a distributed work environment.

Can a remote aerospace engineer work from home?

Remote aerospace engineers can often work from home, especially for tasks involving design, analysis, and software development that require computer work. However, some roles may require on-site presence for testing, manufacturing, or collaboration with physical hardware and teams. The feasibility depends on the company's policies and the specific responsibilities of the position.

Navigation Engineer (Remote)

Moonshot Aerospace

Madison, AL • Remote

Full-time

Re-posted 6 days ago

Job description

Moonshot Aerospace is seeking a Staff Navigation Engineer to lead spacecraft navigation system design and analysis. Initial assignments will support navigation system development for lunar lander, cislunar orbital transfer vehicle (OTV), and related spacecraft programs for commercial and government customers, including the Human Landing System (HLS) and Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS).

This is a navigation-focused position requiring deep experience in Kalman filter design, spacecraft state estimation, and navigation sensor integration for cislunar and planetary environments. The engineer will serve as a technical authority on navigation architecture and will be expected to independently drive navigation system development from requirements through flight operations support. Multiple experience levels are available, and responsibilities will scale with demonstrated capability.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and tune navigation filters (EKF) for lunar lander, OTV, and related spacecraft applications
  • Define navigation system architecture for cislunar and planetary mission phases including sensor selection, measurement models, and filter configuration
  • Develop navigation error budgets and perform covariance analysis for orbit determination and powered descent
  • Implement navigation algorithms in flight software and support SWIL/HWIL integration and test
  • Perform Monte Carlo analysis to verify navigation performance under dispersed conditions across cislunar and descent phases
  • Develop and validate sensor models (IMU, star tracker, GPS/GNSS, LiDAR, optical navigation camera) for lunar and cislunar environments
  • Support navigation sensor testing, calibration, and characterization
  • Contribute to technical documentation, peer reviews, and customer presentations
  • Collaborate across GN&C, flight software, and systems engineering teams

Required Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
  • B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field
  • 5+ years of professional experience in spacecraft navigation system design and analysis
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing Kalman filters for spacecraft applications
  • Experience with navigation sensor integration and testing (IMU, star tracker, GPS, LiDAR)
  • Strong programming skills in C/C++, Python, and MATLAB
  • Experience with spacecraft dynamics and orbital mechanics
  • Familiarity with real-time software systems and flight software integration
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field
  • 8+ years of navigation engineering experience on spacecraft programs
  • Lunar or cislunar navigation experience, including orbit determination and powered descent navigation
  • Terrain Relative Navigation (TRN), optical navigation, or image-based navigation for lunar surface operations
  • Experience with navigation analysis tools (MONTE, GEONS, ODTK, or equivalent)
  • Multi-sensor fusion and relative navigation for rendezvous and proximity operations
  • Hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) navigation sensor integration and test
  • Experience with NASA Trick simulation framework or equivalent
  • Conference publications or technical papers in spacecraft navigation
  • Launch vehicle or satellite navigation experience
