What is remote administration?

Remote administration refers to the process of managing and maintaining computer systems, networks, or servers from a location different from where the systems are physically housed. This is typically achieved using specialized software or remote access tools that allow administrators to monitor, troubleshoot, and update systems securely over the internet. Remote administration is widely used in IT support, system management, and cloud computing environments to increase efficiency and reduce the need for on-site presence. It helps businesses ensure their systems remain operational and secure, even if IT staff cannot be physically present.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote administrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Administrator, you need strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, typically supported by experience in office administration or a related field. Familiarity with cloud-based collaboration tools, virtual meeting platforms, and project management software is essential, and certifications such as Microsoft Office Specialist can be beneficial. Proactive time management, adaptability, and the ability to work independently are crucial soft skills for succeeding in a remote environment. These skills ensure efficient workflow, seamless virtual collaboration, and reliable support for distributed teams.

What are some common challenges faced by remote administrators, and how can they be addressed?

Remote administrators often encounter challenges such as maintaining clear communication across different time zones, staying organized without in-person supervision, and ensuring data security while accessing systems remotely. To address these, it's important to utilize collaboration tools, establish regular check-ins with team members, and follow best practices for secure remote access. Developing strong self-management habits and proactively seeking feedback can also help remote administrators stay aligned with team goals and expectations.

This purpose drives everything we do—from how we serve our members to how we support one another as colleagues. With a strong commitment to community impact, OCCU lives its values of tenacity, humility, and big-heartedness every day.

We are currently seeking an accomplished and growth-focused Director of Insurance Services to lead OCCU’s insurance services team. This is a remote opportunity for candidates residing in Oregon. The salary range for this role is $156,400 – $184,000, depending on experience and qualifications. This position is also eligible for a competitive incentive plan.

About the Role:

The Director of Insurance Services is both a strategic leader and an active producer who will shape the future of OCCU’s insurance program while helping the team deliver strong, sustainable results. This leader will identify business opportunities, develop and execute growth initiatives, strengthen carrier and partner relationships, and continuously improve the products and service experience available to OCCU members.

We are looking for a caring and effective people leader who does more than create the plan. The successful candidate will take ownership of moving initiatives forward, establish clear measures of success, and coach agents and processors to strengthen their capabilities and production. This position requires the ability to balance profitable growth, operational excellence, compliance, member loyalty, and the development of a high-performing team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, coach, and develop insurance agents and processors, creating clear expectations, accountability, and opportunities for continued growth.
  • Actively contribute as a producer while building the team’s ability to generate new business, retain accounts, and deliver trusted service.
  • Develop insurance strategies, business plans, implementation roadmaps, and measurable initiatives, then lead their execution through completion.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to grow OCCU’s Personal Lines and Commercial Lines business.
  • Evaluate and improve insurance products, pricing, service offerings, workflows, and delivery methods to strengthen member value and program profitability.
  • Manage carrier and external partner relationships while identifying new products, vendors, and market opportunities.
  • Establish and oversee effective sales, service, renewal, and policyholder-support processes.
  • Use market research, member feedback, production results, book revenue, renewal activity, and service measurements to evaluate performance and guide decisions.
  • Ensure procedures and workflows remain responsive to regulatory requirements, errors and omissions considerations, market developments, and changes in technology.
  • Communicate program performance, strategic priorities, and recommendations clearly to senior leadership and the CUSO Board of Managers.
  • Build trusted partnerships throughout OCCU and model big-hearted, tenacious, and humble leadership.

What We’re Looking For:

  • A minimum of five years of demonstrated insurance industry experience, including experience growing and/or operating an insurance agency focused on Personal Lines and Commercial Lines.
  • Deep insurance industry knowledge and a proven ability to grow an insurance business line.
  • Demonstrated success as a producer and a leader of sales, service, or insurance operations teams.
  • Proven ability to translate strategy into action, establish measurable goals, hold others accountable, and adjust plans based on results.
  • Strong knowledge of insurance products, carrier relationships, renewals, agency workflows, sales and service measurements, market trends, and business profitability.
  • A leadership approach centered on coaching, development, trust, accountability, and consistent communication.
  • Strong analytical, business-planning, problem-solving, conflict-resolution, and operational decision-making skills.
  • Ability to build influential partnerships with internal stakeholders, carrier partners, vendors, team members, and members.
  • Strong organization, prioritization, documentation, and project leadership skills, with the ability to manage competing demands while maintaining accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through change, remain effective under pressure, and advance initiatives in an evolving business environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • An active Oregon Property and Casualty License, which must be maintained, along with licensure in any additional states where required for OCCU business.
  • A bachelor’s degree or a proven track record of driving measurable business outcomes.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA.
  • CPCU, CISR, CIC, AIS, AFIS, or another relevant insurance designation.

Why Join OCCU:

OCCU offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package designed to support your well-being and professional growth, including:

  • Low-cost medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match
  • Paid time off plus 13 paid holidays
  • Tuition reimbursement for eligible education and training
  • Company-paid long-term disability
  • 40 hours of company-paid core time annually for full-time employees to participate in community volunteer opportunities

If you thrive on building successful teams, growing insurance programs, and turning strategic vision into measurable results, we encourage you to apply today. We are looking for a proven leader who can develop talent, elevate production, strengthen member relationships, lead organizational initiatives from concept to execution, and create sustainable growth while ensuring every member interaction reflects OCCU's commitment to enriching lives.
