Job description

Job Description
The Remote Journeyman Plumber maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, installs, remodels, or constructs industrial plumbing systems, various piping systems, hydronic heating systems, various air handling systems, envirovac toilet units, various pumps, and plumbing equipment. All duties are to be performed in accordance with NMS' mission, vision, and values.
Responsibilities
  • Repairs and installs equipment and systems associated with remote envirovac stations including water and wastewater pumping, storage and distribution systems.
  • Repairs and maintains gas and diesel fired heating systems.
  • Repairs and maintains gas distribution systems, pressure devices and furnace appliances as well as kitchen, laundry and boiler room appliances.
  • Tests, maintains, and repairs fire suppression systems including high volume pumping equipment and circulating pumps.
  • Studies building plans and other materials to determine work aids required and sequence of installations.
  • Inspects structures to lay out proper work procedures.
  • Cuts, threads, bends, and installs or repairs a wide variety of pipes (includes medical gas systems).
  • Assembles and installs valves, fittings, and various pipes.
  • Tests various systems for proper operation, assembly, or to diagnose problems.
  • May perform a variety of other duties required to maintain and operate commercial or industrial facilities.
  • May also be designated as a Remote Plumber I, II, or III.
  • Attends daily safety tool box meetings and is required to do job safety evaluations for each job.
  • Notify supervisor is safety and sanitation standards are not being met.
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
  • Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit's success also may be assigned.

Qualifications
  • Must have completed a formal training program relating to the plumbing industry.
  • Must have at least five (5) years' verifiable industrial plumbing experience which demonstrates knowledge of water distribution systems, wastewater systems, industrial high volume pumping equipment, gas distribution systems, pressure devices, gas and diesel fired heating systems and furnace appliances, appliances used in industrial kitchens, laundries, and boiler rooms, fire suppression systems, and the state plumbing codes.
  • Must be licensed to work as a Journeyman Plumber in the State of Alaska.
  • A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NMS' vehicle insurance policy.
  • Must pass all pre-employment contract requirements which may include but are not limited to: hair follicle drug test, physical and fit for duty assessment and hearing test. Applicants not located near a testing facility are responsible for paying for travel to the nearest testing facility.
  • Must be able to cooperate and work as part of a team with fellow employees, customers and clients.
  • Must be able to make decisions in the moment with little to no supervision.
  • Must be able to be on your feet for 12 hours per shift for the scheduled rotation.
  • Must be able to live in dormitory style settings and meet cleanliness requirements of the remote camp.
  • Contract requires employees to speak, understand, read and write English.
  • Must meet and adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations set forth by the company and client.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Weather: Indoor/Outdoor. Frequently exposed to arctic conditions.
Noise level: Moderate to Loud
Description of environment: This is a remote camp setting. Employees must constantly be able to stand, walk, climb, push, pull use hands and arms, stoop, kneel and crouch. Employees are occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
Travel: Must be able to travel by plane and/or bus to remote camps.
Physical requirements: Fit For Duty Test
  • Lift: Lift 75 lbs. from floor to knuckle x2
  • Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to waist x 2
  • Lift: Lift 25 lbs. from floor to shoulders x 2
  • Carry: Carry 50 lbs. with two hands for a minimum distance of 25 feet.
  • Push: push horizontally with a peak force of 100 f-lbs. with two hands.
  • Pull: Pull horizontally with a peak force of 100 f-lbs. with two hands.
  • Stoop & Twist: Perform alternate cross over toe touches x 10 each side, self-paced but continuous.
  • Squat Test: Functionally squat x 10, self-paced but continuous.
  • Kneel: Kneel on one knee and stand. Return to kneel on opposite knee. Repeat alternate kneeling sequence x 10 for each knee, self-pace but continuous.
  • Stairs: Climb up and down 10 steps x 10 for a total of 100 steps using one hand to grasp a railing for safety, self-paced:
    • Allow 30 second rest after climbing up and down each set of 50 steps, self-paced.
  • Stairs & Carry: Climb up and down 5 steps x 10 for a total of 50 steps while carrying 20 lbs. in one hand and using the other hand to grasp a railing for safety, self-paced.
    • Allow a 30 second rest period after climbing up and down 48 steps while carrying.
  • Slanted Ladder: Climb a slanted ladder with 6 rungs x 6 repetitions for a total of 60 rungs, self-paced but continuous.
  • All tests must be performed within a safe target heart rate as determined by the contract requirements.
