What is a remote 3D modeler?

Remote 3D Modelers are professionals who create three-dimensional digital representations of objects, environments, or characters, typically using specialized software. They work from a location outside of a traditional office, collaborating with clients or teams online. Their work is used in industries like gaming, architecture, film, and product design. Remote 3D Modelers must be skilled in relevant software, have a strong portfolio, and be able to communicate effectively in a virtual work environment.

What does a remote 3D modeler do?

As a remote 3D modeler, your duties are to work from home to design and build a prototype or 3D model for your clients. You may work using sculpting software or sculpt prototypes out of physical materials which you then present to clients. You can find this work in several industries, but the most common field is arts and entertainment. Although some 3D modelers work on spec, many get contracts from organizations or businesses to help animators, producers, and directors realize already existing designs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote 3D modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote 3D Modeler, you need strong artistic ability, proficiency in 3D modeling principles, and experience with digital sculpting, typically supported by a portfolio and relevant education or training. Mastery of industry-standard software such as Blender, Autodesk Maya, or 3ds Max, as well as familiarity with file formats and rendering engines, is essential. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear communication skills set standout candidates apart when collaborating remotely with teams or clients. These skills and qualities ensure the timely delivery of high-quality models and effective teamwork across distributed work environments.

How does a remote 3D modeler typically collaborate with team members and clients across different locations?

Remote 3D Modelers often work closely with art directors, animators, and developers through digital communication tools such as Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms. Regular video meetings, screen-sharing sessions, and feedback cycles are essential to ensure models align with project requirements and client expectations. Sharing work-in-progress files via cloud storage and version control systems also helps maintain smooth collaboration despite differing time zones. Effective communication and proactive updates are key to overcoming the challenges of remote teamwork.

BIM Modeler, Civil & Underground Utilities

Job description

What you'll do

As BIM Modeler, Civil & Underground Utilities, you'll own everything that sits below grade and outside the building line in our federated model. Anything from foundations and equipment pads, electrical duct banks and underground raceway, grounding, and equipment yard layout. This role sits inside our growing BIM function, working shoulder-to-shoulder with electrical, structural, and civil designers to keep one federated model as the single source of truth from design through fabrication and field support.

Where you'll work

We are an in-office culture - velocity matters when you're building physical infrastructure, and the best decisions happen in the room. This role is ideally based in our San Francisco, Long Beach, or Houston offices, with full-time onsite expectations outside of bi-weekly WFH Fridays.

That said, we will make exceptions for truly exceptional talent if you live outside one of our hubs. If you're the right person for this role, we'll have a conversation about what works.

Responsibilities
  • Model foundations, equipment pads, embeds, and anchor bolt setting plans for transformers, substations, switchgear, and other heavy equipment, coordinated against equipment general arrangement drawings
  • Model electrical duct banks and underground raceway - conduit arrangement, encasement, bend radii, spare capacity, manholes, and pull boxes
  • Model the grounding system - ground grids, rods, conductor routing, and connections to pads, structures, and fence lines
  • Model outdoor structures and equipment yard layout, including electrical clearances, phase spacing, and maintenance access
  • Take in Civil 3D surfaces, utility networks, and survey data and reconcile them into the federated model, including shared coordinates and georeferencing
  • Own the outdoor and underground models within the federated set and run underground clash cycles - duct bank against foundation, grounding against structure - resolving conflicts rather than just reporting them
  • Produce foundation plans, duct bank plans and sections, grounding plans, and yard layout drawings to Giga's CAD standards
  • Generate model-based quantity takeoffs for concrete, reinforcement, steel, and conduit to support estimating and procurement
  • Build and maintain the parametric family library for repeatable outdoor and underground content - pads, duct bank sections, manholes, and bus supports
Requirements
  • Expert-level Autodesk Revit, 5-8 years, including structural modeling, family creation, parametric content, worksharing, and shared coordinates
  • Demonstrated experience modeling foundations, equipment pads, and anchor bolt or embed layouts for heavy equipment
  • Demonstrated experience modeling underground electrical raceway or duct banks - routing, encasement, spare capacity, manholes, and pull boxes
  • Industrial, energy, substation, or mission-critical background; commercial or residential Revit experience alone will not transfer to this scope
  • Able to read, link, and reconcile Civil 3D data - surfaces, pipe networks, alignments, and survey points - into a Revit model
  • Working knowledge of NEC Article 300.5, NESC / IEEE 605, IEEE 80, ASCE 7, ACI 318, and AISC 360
  • Navisworks proficiency, including running clash tests and resolving interference in your own models
  • Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship
Bonus points
  • Experience designing civil systems for data centers, mission-critical, or other technically complex industrial facilities - multi-block sites, high-density underground electrical distribution, utility interconnection
  • Substation civil and structural work - yard layout, equipment foundations, grounding grids, oil containment
  • Hands-on Civil 3D authoring ability
  • Modular or repeat-deployment work where the model drives a factory build and gets reused rather than redrawn
  • Dynamo or Revit API scripting to automate repetitive modeling and QA
Benefits
  • Subsidized health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Equity (options) in a rapidly growing startup
  • 401(k) with 4% employer match
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Parental leave
  • Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA)
  • Commuter benefits
  • Team on-sites where all offices come in-person to collaborate
