What does a remodeler do?

A remodeler is a professional who specializes in renovating and improving existing buildings, typically homes or commercial properties. Their work can include tasks such as updating kitchens and bathrooms, finishing basements, changing layouts, and repairing or replacing structural elements. Remodelers often coordinate with clients, designers, and subcontractors to ensure that projects meet the desired specifications, codes, and budgets. Their goal is to enhance the functionality, appearance, and value of a space.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remodeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remodeler, you need strong carpentry, construction, and problem-solving skills, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent and relevant trade experience. Familiarity with power tools, building codes, and project management software is typically required, and certification from organizations like the National Association of Home Builders can be beneficial. Attention to detail, customer service orientation, and effective communication help set top remodelers apart. These skills and qualities are critical to ensuring high-quality workmanship, client satisfaction, and efficient project completion.

What are some common challenges remodelers face when working on residential projects?

Remodelers often encounter unexpected issues such as hidden structural damage, outdated wiring or plumbing, and materials shortages, which can affect project timelines and budgets. Communication with clients about these unforeseen challenges is crucial to maintaining trust and satisfaction. Additionally, coordinating with subcontractors and adhering to local building codes require strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Flexibility and adaptability are key traits for success in this dynamic work environment.

Job description

Build Something You’re Proud Of — With a Company That Values Good Work

Serenity Home Transformations is looking for an experienced residential remodeling installer to join our in-house team.

We specialize in improving existing homes through replacement windows, siding, decks, and exterior remodeling.

We're a smaller local company, and we're looking for more than someone who can simply show up with a tool belt.

We want someone who takes pride in their work, treats customers right, solves problems, follows through, and wants to be part of a team that cares about the finished product.

If that's how you work, we'd like to talk to you.

What You'll Do

Our in-house crew handles smaller remodeling projects, installations, repairs, and service work, including:

  • Install replacement windows

  • Install and repair residential siding

  • Bend and install aluminum trim

  • Build and repair residential decks

  • Complete exterior trim and finish work

  • Diagnose and repair problems on existing homes

  • Complete service calls and punch-list items

  • Keep job sites clean, organized, and safe

  • Communicate professionally with homeowners

Most of our larger projects are completed by subcontractor crews. This position requires someone versatile enough to handle the smaller projects and service work where experience, craftsmanship, and problem-solving matter.

The Kind of Person Who Does Well Here

You take pride in your work.
You care about what the finished job looks like, even when nobody is standing over your shoulder.

You're dependable.
Customers and coworkers shouldn't have to wonder whether you're going to show up.

You take ownership.
When you find a problem, you don't hide it or walk past it. You communicate and help figure out the right solution.

You can think for yourself.
Existing homes aren't always square, level, or built the way they're supposed to be. You need to be able to troubleshoot what you find.

You treat customers and their homes with respect.
We're working at someone's home, not on an empty construction site. Professionalism matters.

You're willing to keep learning.
We don't expect one person to know everything. We do expect experienced people to be willing to learn.

You're a team player.
We're a small company. Attitude, communication, and willingness to help matter here.

Experience We're Looking For

You should have at least 2 years of hands-on residential remodeling or exterior installation experience.

We're especially interested in experience with:

  • Replacement windows

  • Vinyl siding

  • LP® SmartSide

  • Fiber cement siding

  • Steel siding

  • Aluminum trim and brake work

  • Exterior finish carpentry

  • Deck construction and repair

  • Residential service and repair work

Strong replacement window and/or siding experience is most important.

You don't need to be an expert at everything listed above.

We'd rather hire someone who is great at their trade, dependable, takes pride in their work, and is willing to learn than someone who checks every box on an application.

This Is NOT an Entry-Level Construction Job

This position is not intended for:

  • Entry-level construction workers

  • General laborers with little remodeling experience

  • Roofing-only applicants

  • Applicants whose experience is primarily new construction framing

We work on existing homes, and we're looking for someone who understands residential remodeling.

If you've worked on existing homes, you know why that distinction matters.

Travel

Our projects are located throughout Cedar Rapids and the surrounding Eastern Iowa area.

You'll travel to different job sites as part of the position.

A valid driver's license is required.

What We Expect

You should be able to:

  • Show up consistently and on time

  • Work independently when needed

  • Follow through on what you start

  • Troubleshoot remodeling and installation problems

  • Communicate professionally with homeowners

  • Take responsibility for the quality of your work

  • Maintain a clean and safe job site

  • Work well with a small team

  • Safely operate construction tools and equipment

  • Lift and carry construction materials up to 75 lbs.

  • Travel to job sites throughout our service area

What You Can Expect From Serenity

We believe expectations go both ways.

We offer:

  • $21–$28/hour based on experience and ability

  • Full-time employment

  • Consistent work

  • Paid time off

  • 401(k)

  • 401(k) company match

  • No overnight travel — home every night

  • Variety of remodeling and service work

  • Opportunity for additional compensation based on performance

  • Opportunity to take on more responsibility as you prove yourself

  • A smaller company where good employees are noticed and valued

If you bring more skills and can handle more responsibility independently, we're willing to pay accordingly.

Who We're Hoping to Find

We're not trying to hire just anyone who wants a construction job.

We're looking for someone who can become an important part of Serenity Home Transformations.

Someone who can look at a finished project and be proud to say:

"I did that."

If you're experienced, dependable, good with homeowners, and believe craftsmanship still matters, we'd like to hear from you.
