What does a remodeler do?

A remodeler is a professional who specializes in renovating and improving existing buildings, typically homes or commercial properties. Their work can include tasks such as updating kitchens and bathrooms, finishing basements, changing layouts, and repairing or replacing structural elements. Remodelers often coordinate with clients, designers, and subcontractors to ensure that projects meet the desired specifications, codes, and budgets. Their goal is to enhance the functionality, appearance, and value of a space.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remodeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remodeler, you need strong carpentry, construction, and problem-solving skills, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent and relevant trade experience. Familiarity with power tools, building codes, and project management software is typically required, and certification from organizations like the National Association of Home Builders can be beneficial. Attention to detail, customer service orientation, and effective communication help set top remodelers apart. These skills and qualities are critical to ensuring high-quality workmanship, client satisfaction, and efficient project completion.

What are some common challenges remodelers face when working on residential projects?

Remodelers often encounter unexpected issues such as hidden structural damage, outdated wiring or plumbing, and materials shortages, which can affect project timelines and budgets. Communication with clients about these unforeseen challenges is crucial to maintaining trust and satisfaction. Additionally, coordinating with subcontractors and adhering to local building codes require strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Flexibility and adaptability are key traits for success in this dynamic work environment.

Experienced Remodeler
Handyman Connection of Fishers
Full-Time and Part-Time W-2 Positions | 1099 Subcontractor Opportunities
Pay: $30-$45 per hour, depending on experience and skill level

Comfortable taking a renovation from tear-out to the finishing touches? We're looking for an experienced remodeler who understands what happens between the "before" and "after" pictures.
We're a growing, local, family-owned company that cares about our customers and the people doing the work just as much. We're looking for employees to join our team and established independent contractors to partner with us.
What you'll do
Focus on larger residential renovations involving multiple stages and several days or weeks of work, including:
  • Kitchen and bathroom remodeling.
  • Demolition, preparation, and carpentry.
  • Cabinet, trim, flooring, and tile installation.
  • Drywall and painting as part of the renovation.
  • Identifying material needs and coordinating your work with other trades and the office.

How we work
  • Show up on time and ready to work Keep agreed appointments and communicate schedule changes promptly. "On my way" should involve actually being on your way.
  • Use Jobber daily Review project instructions, upload before, progress, and after photos, and document completed work and next steps.
  • Keep everyone informed Communicate with the office and customers about progress, unexpected conditions, material needs, and scope changes.
  • Keep projects organized and on schedule Plan the sequence of your work, coordinate material needs, and track remaining tasks to meet agreed deadlines. Flag potential delays early.
  • Finish strong Complete the punch list, clean the work area, and update Jobber so the project is ready for final review.

Attention to detail matters. "The trim will hide it" can't be the entire plan.
What we're looking for
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience, including completed kitchen or bathroom renovations.
  • Strong skills in several remodeling trades.
  • Ability to organize and complete your portion of a renovation independently.
  • Knowledge of installation methods and applicable building codes.
  • Reliable communication and respect for occupied homes.
  • A valid driver's license, reliable transportation, a smartphone, and work references.
  • Independent contractors must provide their own tools and appropriate business insurance.

What you'll get
  • Consistent opportunities for larger remodeling projects.
  • Office support with scheduling and customer coordination.
  • Marketing that brings in customers.
  • A team that values craftsmanship, your time, and following through.

Apply today and tell us your specialties and the renovations you've completed. Before-and-after photos are welcome
