Job description

Overview

The RN Oncology Services conducts the initial patient assessment, assists in the development of treatment plan, delivers care and documents any variances in patient's condition. S/he provides nursing case management functions and generates referrals for testing or to other physicians as directed. The RN assists and/or performs procedures that are within the scope of nursing practice and works as part of a multidisciplinary team and provides input to the continuity of care. S/he will be in direct contact with adult and geriatric patients and must possess the skills to care for their physical and developmental needs.


Responsibilities

Patient Care
* Completes chart audits ensuring accuracy and documents changes.
* Completes nursing assessment for new patients (prepares charts, enters patient history in the EMR, and verifies medications).
* Updates patient care records.
* Implements corrective actions based on the recognition of changes in patient's condition.
* Knowledge of IV and/or oral chemotherapy medications that may be prescribed.
* Interprets basic laboratory and diagnostic data and communicates results to physician for follow-up/intervention.
* Demonstrates accuracy of documentation of assessments, interventions and patient responses.
* Utilizes the pain scale in assessing patient's pain and documents interventions and progress.
* Functions as a part of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure continuity of care and concerns.
* Documents patients on concurrent treatment and communicates to the appropriate staff.
* Coordinates Brachy Therapy procedures with physicians offices and OR scheduling.
* Is responsible for patient teaching for pre-op and post-op follow up instructions.
* Maintains open interactions with various internals department, outside agencies, patients and their families.
Event Participation and Coordination
* Participates in Cancer Center sponsored community health screenings and events.
Compliance/Safety
* Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.
* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility.
* If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.
* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame.
* Remains current on radiation oncology and medical oncology practices.

Qualifications

Education
RNs hired on or after 7/1/2016: Must graduate from a BSN program within 6 years of hire into an RN position.
Existing Staff RNs: RNs hired before 7/1/2016 are not mandated to have a BSN, but are encouraged to pursue a BSN degree.
Certification & Licensures

Active, unrestricted, Arizona RN License or valid, participating compact license - Required
BLS (American Heart Association) - Required upon date of hire
Medical Oncology: ACLS - Required
The following ONS certifications/education pertinent to clinical field of employment by December 31st of the year following date of hire:
Medical Oncology = OCN, AOCN or AOCNS – Preferred OR
Earn 12 cancer-related continuing education nursing contact hours per calendar year - Required
Breast Oncology = CBCN – Preferred OR
Earn 12 cancer-related continuing education nursing contact hours per calendar year - Required
Radiation Oncology = ONS/ONCC Radiation Therapy Certificate – Preferred OR
Earn 12 cancer-related continuing education nursing contact hours per calendar year - Required
Employee will obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies for the roles assigned by their departmental leader.
Experience
Minimum 1 year experience in the field of oncology- Required
Minimum 3 years of acute care nursing experience- Preferred
Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
CALL REQUIRED: Must be able to physically show up
