Liberty Mutual is seeking a management-level attorney for a dynamic, innovative, and fast-paced team. This managing attorney will lead a team of lawyers and legal professionals who support the personal auto operations of Liberty Mutual Group's US Retail Markets (USRM) business unit ($27 billion). The role focuses on legal support and guidance for USRM's auto insurance products, including product design, pricing, underwriting, forms, telematics, and state management operations. The position provides oversight of legal strategy and resourcing for USRM's Personal Auto leadership and their strategic priorities.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage goals, capacity, performance, and development for team members/direct reports.
  • Maintain visibility, communicate broadly, and actively collaborate across teams; provide strategic oversight of key initiatives within USRM's Personal Auto insurance product team.
  • Represent and advise the Company in substantial legal and business matters that require insurance regulatory expertise and often involve original legal analysis, complex or novel issues, or vigorous adversarial proceedings.
  • Perform comprehensive legal research and analysis in assigned specialty areas; direct, focus, and refine research conducted by others.
  • Drive operational excellence within the Legal team by improving knowledge sharing and retention, documentation, and the appropriate use of tools and technology.
Qualifications
  • Completion of law school with a J.D. or L.L.B. degree and admission to the bar of at least one U.S. jurisdiction required. Generally requires at least fifteen to twenty years' experience as a practicing attorney
  • Experience advising on personal-lines product, product design, underwriting, and pricing matters
  • Expert knowledge of insurance regulatory law
  • Excellent analytical, legal writing, and communication skills; familiarity with corporate operations; a proactive approach to work; commitment to Liberty's values; and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across internal teams, and representatives of other companies 
  • Management experience and/or CPCU preferred
