Reliability Maintainability Engineer information

What is a reliability maintainability engineer?

Reliability Maintainability Engineers are professionals who focus on ensuring that products, systems, or equipment are both reliable and easy to maintain throughout their lifecycle. Their work involves analyzing failure data, developing strategies to improve product reliability, and designing maintenance processes that reduce downtime and costs. They often collaborate with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to create robust products that meet industry standards and customer expectations. Reliability Maintainability Engineers also use various tools and methodologies, such as Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Root Cause Analysis (RCA), to proactively address potential issues.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a reliability maintainability engineer?

To thrive as a Reliability Maintainability Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, data analysis, and reliability modeling, often supported by a degree in mechanical or electrical engineering. Familiarity with reliability analysis software (such as ReliaSoft), statistical tools, and maintenance management systems is commonly required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the ability to design, evaluate, and improve systems for optimal performance and longevity, reducing downtime and costs for organizations.

How does a reliability maintainability engineer typically collaborate with other departments to improve system performance?

Reliability Maintainability Engineers work closely with design, production, and quality assurance teams to ensure systems are both reliable and easy to maintain. They frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to review failure data, propose design improvements, and establish maintenance protocols. This collaboration is crucial for identifying potential issues early and implementing solutions that enhance overall equipment effectiveness. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as these engineers often need to balance technical recommendations with practical constraints from other departments.

What is the difference between Reliability Maintainability Engineer vs Maintenance Engineer?

AspectReliability Maintainability EngineerMaintenance Engineer
Primary FocusEnsuring system reliability and maintainability through analysis and design improvementsPerforming routine and corrective maintenance to keep equipment operational
CertificationsReliability engineering, maintenance planning, sometimes engineering degreesTrade certifications, technical diplomas, or associate degrees
Work EnvironmentDesign phases, analysis labs, field reliability assessmentsOn-site equipment repair, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance
Industry UsageManufacturing, aerospace, energy, defenseManufacturing, facilities management, industrial plants

Reliability Maintainability Engineers focus on designing and analyzing systems to improve long-term performance, while Maintenance Engineers handle day-to-day repairs and upkeep. Both roles are essential but differ in scope and responsibilities.

The Reliability Engineer serves as the site reliability leader and technical subject matter expert for asset reliability, maintenance strategy, predictive maintenance, and continuous improvement. This position is responsible for improving equipment reliability, maintainability, asset performance, and operational effectiveness across manufacturing, packaging, utilities, warehouse, and facility systems.

The Reliability Engineer develops and drives the site Asset Care Strategy, leads reliability improvement initiatives, and partners closely with Maintenance, Operations, Engineering, Quality, and EHS to reduce equipment failures, improve uptime, optimize maintenance costs, and ensure compliance with cGMP, FDA, safety, and quality requirements.

The base salary range for this role is $120,000- $140,000

Scope of the Role

Asset Reliability & Maintenance Strategy

  • Lead the site Asset Care Strategy and reliability improvement programs, including RCA, FMEA, RCM, equipment criticality assessments, bad actor analysis, and defect elimination.
  • Identify recurring equipment issues, analyze maintenance and performance data, and implement sustainable corrective actions to improve uptime, reliability, maintainability, and asset life.
  • Optimize preventive and predictive maintenance programs, including condition monitoring strategies such as vibration analysis, thermography, ultrasound, and oil analysis.
  • Establish, monitor, and improve reliability KPIs, dashboards, spare parts strategies, equipment BOMs, asset hierarchies, and maintenance standards.
  • Partner with Maintenance, Planning, Operations, and Engineering to improve maintenance execution, equipment performance, and asset care effectiveness.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure reliability activities support cGMP, FDA, safety, environmental, and quality requirements.
  • Support equipment-related investigations, deviations, CAPAs, change controls, audit readiness, and inspection preparedness.
  • Ensure reliability programs reduce operational risk and support product quality, process capability, and asset integrity.

Continuous Improvement & Capital Projects

  • Lead reliability-focused initiatives that reduce downtime, improve OEE, optimize maintenance costs, and extend asset life.
  • Develop reliability improvement plans and long-term reliability roadmaps aligned with site objectives.
  • Support capital projects through reliability reviews, maintainability assessments, design reviews, installation support, commissioning, startup, and performance verification.
  • Collaborate with OEMs, contractors, suppliers, and engineering resources to improve reliability and implement new reliability technologies or digital maintenance tools.

Technical Leadership & Collaboration

  • Serve as the site technical expert for reliability engineering, predictive maintenance, and asset performance improvement.
  • Provide technical coaching to maintenance personnel, planners, supervisors, engineers, and operations teams.
  • Support troubleshooting of complex equipment failures, critical maintenance events, and major operational disruptions.
  • Promote a culture of asset ownership, accountability, reliability, and continuous improvement.
Experience Required

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Reliability Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum 7 years of reliability engineering, maintenance engineering, asset management, or related experience in manufacturing.
  • Experience with RCA, FMEA, RCM, criticality assessments, defect elimination, preventive maintenance, and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Experience supporting maintenance planning, scheduling, maintenance optimization, asset performance improvement, and reliability KPIs.
  • Strong troubleshooting, root cause analysis, data analysis, communication, collaboration, and technical leadership skills.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing equipment, utilities, HVAC systems, pumps, motors, conveyors, instrumentation, controls, and facility infrastructure.

Preferred:

  • Experience in FDA-regulated pharmaceutical, consumer healthcare, food, infant formula, or other GMP-regulated manufacturing environments.
