How much do relay tester jobs pay per hour?
What is a relay tester?
A Relay Tester is responsible for inspecting, testing, and troubleshooting electrical relays used in power systems to ensure they function correctly. They use specialized equipment to verify relay settings, perform diagnostics, and calibrate protective relays to maintain system reliability. This role is critical in preventing electrical failures and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Relay Testers often work in substations, power plants, or industrial settings.
What skills and qualifications are needed to be a relay tester?
A Relay Tester should possess a solid understanding of electrical circuits, protective relay systems, and troubleshooting techniques, typically supported by an associate degree or certification in electrical engineering technology. Familiarity with relay test sets (such as Omicron or Doble), knowledge of SCADA systems, and safety certifications like OSHA are often required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are important soft skills for this role. Mastery of these skills ensures accurate testing, compliance with safety standards, and reliable performance in maintaining power system protection.
What equipment and testing procedures does a relay tester typically use?
Relay Testers routinely use specialized test equipment such as Doble or Omicron relay test sets to simulate electrical faults and verify the correct operation of protective relays. Daily responsibilities include interpreting wiring diagrams, calibrating devices, and documenting testing results to ensure system reliability. They often follow established safety protocols and work both independently in the field and collaboratively with engineers and substation teams. This hands-on work is vital to maintaining the safety and reliability of electrical power systems in utility, industrial, or large commercial settings.
