The Maryland Department of Veterans & Military Families was created by the StateLegilature in 1999 as an executive agency with the mission of assisting veterans, active dutyservice members their famiiies and dependents, in securing benefits earned through militarysevice.\r\n\r\n\r\nUnder the Department of Veterans & Military Families are five major programs:\r\nService and Benefits Program\r\nCharlotte Hall Veteans Home\r\nCemetary and Memorial Program\r\nCommunications, Outreach & Advocacy Program\r\nMaryland Veterans Trust Fund\r\n

POSITION DUTIES

This position initiates and presents claims for compensation, pension, entitlements andother benefits to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and other agencies on behalfof veterans, their eligible dependents, and their survivors. Helping veterans and theirdependents receive the benefits to which they are entitled is a requirement set forth in theAnnotated Code of Maryland, State Government Article Subtitle 9.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAssists and represents veterans, their dependents, and their survivorsapplying for compensation, pension, and entitlements. Advises veterans andtheir families regarding benefits to which they may be entitled. Conducts\r\ninterviews and inquiries to ensure that veterans and their families are notneglected. This position requires the ability to work across all ServiceProgram locations. This position requires the ability to work across all\r\nService Program Benefit offices that are within 50 miles of your assignedlocation.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAssists veterans and their families in obtaining military records andevidence necessary to facilitate benefits and entitlements.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nProvides intake services and screening. Functions as a primary point ofcontact for persons wishing to access services offered by the Department.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nUnder general supervision, conducts public relations and public informationactivities; represents the Department at veterans' organization conventionsand at public meetings and events.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. \r\nExperience: One year of experience providing services to veterans and their dependents. \r\n

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

\r\nPreference will be given to\r\napplicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear\r\nand specific information on your application regarding your\r\nqualifications.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAbility to understand, interpret and convey a system of benefits to a veteran and their familyto ensure they receive entitlements earned through military service.\r\n\r\n\r\nAbility to interact with customers to achieve satisfaction along with the desired results.\r\n

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1.In accordance with United States Code, Title 38, Section 5901-5905, employees in this classification must be certified as a Veterans' Services Counselor by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.\r\n2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland. \r\n
