Summary:

The Refrigeration Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Refrigeration department in Anacortes, Washington. The successful candidate will supervise and coordinate a team of technicians engaged in the repair, maintenance, and installation of ammonia refrigeration systems, as well as mechanical equipment including pumps, condensers, compressors, valves, and other utility system components. This role ensures safe, efficient, and reliable operation of refrigeration and utility systems while supporting departmental goals and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Supervises and coordinates the daily activities of refrigeration technicians to ensure safe and efficient operation of ammonia refrigeration and facility systems.
  • Assigns, prioritizes, and monitors preventive maintenance, repair, and installation work to meet operational requirements and minimize downtime.
  • Ensures refrigeration equipment, compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, valves, and related utility systems are maintained in accordance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Promotes and enforces compliance with Process Safety Management (PSM), EPA Risk Management Program (RMP), OSHA regulations, and all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Conducts routine inspections of refrigeration and utility equipment to identify potential issues and ensure reliable system performance.
  • Provides technical guidance, coaching, and training to refrigeration personnel to support employee development and continuous improvement.
  • Participates in troubleshooting and resolving equipment failures, system inefficiencies, and emergency situations.
  • Coordinates contractor activities and verifies work is completed safely, accurately, and according to specifications.
  • Maintains accurate maintenance records, work orders, inspections, regulatory documentation, and department reports.
  • Participate in incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action development to improve safety and reliability.

Travel/On-Call Requirements:

This role requires availability to respond to facility and refrigeration emergencies outside of normal business hours as needed.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience maintaining and repairing industrial ammonia refrigeration systems in a manufacturing, food processing, or industrial environment.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of leadership experience that can include leading projects/programs or coordinating the work of others.

Preferred Education & Experiences:

  • Associate degree, technical certification, or formal training in Industrial Refrigeration, Mechanical Maintenance, HVAC/R, or a related field.
  • RETA certification (CARO, CIRO, CRST, or equivalent).
  • Two (2) or more years of supervisory, lead, or team leadership experience.
  • Experience in food processing, seafood processing, or a highly regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Program (RMP) compliance.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement, reliability-centered maintenance, and preventive maintenance programs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Demonstrated knowledge of industrial refrigeration equipment, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, valves, control systems, and related utility equipment.
  • Working knowledge of ammonia refrigeration safety practices and applicable regulatory requirements, including OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) standards.
  • Knowledge of industrial ammonia refrigeration systems, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, vessels, valves, and associated controls.
  • Knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM), EPA Risk Management Program (RMP), OSHA regulations, and applicable environmental and safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and maintenance documentation practices.
  • Strong leadership and employee supervision skills.
  • Effective planning, scheduling, and work prioritization skills.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills related to refrigeration and utility systems.
  • Ability to supervise and motivate employees in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to make sound decisions during equipment failures, production interruptions, and emergency situations.
  • Ability to identify operational risks and implement corrective actions to maintain safe and reliable operation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and maintenance management software.
  • Ability to coordinate work across multiple departments and with outside contractors.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Work Ability Requirements:

Ability to work around a production line with machinery and moving parts.
