How much do reefer trucking jobs pay per week?

As of Aug 27, 2026, the average weekly pay for reefer trucking in the United States is $1,573.46, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $1,326.92 and $1,740.38 per week, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is reefer trucking?

Reefer trucking refers to the transportation of temperature-sensitive goods using refrigerated trucks, also known as 'reefers.' These trucks are equipped with specialized refrigeration units to maintain specific temperature ranges, ensuring that perishable items like food, pharmaceuticals, and flowers remain fresh during transit. Reefer truck drivers must monitor and adjust temperatures, follow strict safety regulations, and often handle time-sensitive deliveries. This field plays a crucial role in supply chains, especially for industries that require climate-controlled logistics.

What are some common challenges faced by reefer truck drivers and how can they be managed?

Reefer truck drivers often face unique challenges such as strict delivery schedules due to the perishable nature of their cargo, maintaining proper temperature control, and dealing with equipment malfunctions. To manage these challenges, drivers must regularly monitor and document temperature settings, perform routine equipment checks, and communicate proactively with dispatch and clients if issues arise. Many companies provide specialized training and support to help drivers handle these responsibilities effectively, ensuring product safety and timely deliveries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a reefer truck driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Reefer Truck Driver, you need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), knowledge of DOT regulations, and experience with refrigerated transport. Familiarity with temperature control systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and basic mechanical troubleshooting is crucial. Excellent time management, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help drivers ensure prompt, safe, and compliant deliveries. These skills are vital for maintaining product quality, meeting delivery schedules, and upholding safety standards in the refrigerated transport industry.

What is the difference between Reefer Trucking vs Dry Van Trucking?

AspectReefer TruckingDry Van Trucking
Cargo TypePerishable goods requiring temperature controlNon-perishable goods, general freight
EquipmentRefrigerated trailers (reefers)Standard dry van trailers
Work EnvironmentLoading/unloading perishable items, temperature-sensitive conditionsLoading/unloading general freight, less temperature concern
CertificationsCommercial Driver’s License (CDL), possibly refrigeration endorsementCDL required

Reefer Trucking involves transporting temperature-sensitive cargo using refrigerated trailers, often requiring refrigeration endorsements. Dry Van Trucking handles general freight without temperature control. Both roles typically require a CDL and share similar work environments, but Reefer Trucking demands additional knowledge of handling perishable goods.

How much do reefer trucking drivers make?

Reefer trucking drivers typically earn between $45,000 and $75,000 annually, with experienced drivers and those working long-haul routes earning higher wages. Compensation often includes per-mile pay, bonuses, and benefits, and requires a commercial driver's license (CDL) and knowledge of refrigeration equipment.

What is the best reefer trucking company to work for?

Reefer trucking drivers often consider companies with good safety records, competitive pay, and reliable equipment. Factors such as driver reviews, benefits, and support for work-life balance are important when evaluating potential employers in the reefer trucking industry.
