What is a Reddit moderator?

A Reddit Moderator is responsible for managing and overseeing a specific subreddit community. Their duties include enforcing community rules, removing inappropriate content, engaging with users, and ensuring discussions remain constructive. Moderators may also create guidelines, handle reports, and collaborate with other mods to improve the subreddit. The role is typically voluntary, though some moderators of large or branded communities may receive compensation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Reddit moderator?

To thrive as a Reddit Moderator, you need strong critical thinking, attention to detail, and a thorough understanding of Reddit’s community guidelines and platform rules. Familiarity with moderation tools such as Automoderator, subreddit settings, and reporting systems is often required, though formal certifications are uncommon. Excellent communication, impartiality, and conflict resolution skills help moderators manage discussions and work effectively with both users and co-moderators. These skills and qualities are crucial for fostering a healthy online community and ensuring adherence to community standards.

What are some common challenges Reddit moderators face and how can they address them?

Reddit Moderators often encounter challenges such as managing high volumes of user posts, resolving disputes between community members, and enforcing rules consistently across diverse situations. Moderators can address these challenges by staying up-to-date with platform policies, leveraging moderation tools efficiently, and maintaining clear communication within their moderation team. It's important to set clear expectations for community behavior and to work collaboratively to address issues promptly and fairly. Continued learning and adaptability help moderators navigate evolving online trends and ensure a positive user experience.

Can anyone be a Reddit moderator?

Reddit moderator roles are typically open to anyone interested in managing a community, but applicants usually need to demonstrate good judgment, communication skills, and familiarity with Reddit's rules. Some subreddits may have specific requirements or prefer experienced users, and moderators often need to commit time to monitor and enforce community guidelines.

Do Reddit moderators get paid?

Most Reddit moderators are volunteers who do not receive payment for their duties. Some subreddits may offer stipends or compensation, but this is uncommon and typically not the norm for volunteer moderation roles. Paid moderation jobs are more often found through third-party companies managing social media accounts, not directly on Reddit.

How do you become a Reddit moderator?

To become a Reddit moderator, you typically need to be an active member of a specific subreddit, demonstrate understanding of community rules, and apply through the subreddit’s moderation team or be invited by existing moderators. Some subreddits require applicants to have a history of constructive participation and may assess skills like communication and conflict resolution. No formal certification is required, but familiarity with Reddit’s tools and policies is essential.

Job description

Moderators are central to making Reddit's communities thrive. We're looking for a Senior Community Lifecycle Manager to build programs that educate, engage, and reactivate moderators, from creating a subreddit to growing an established community.

Reddit's Community Lifecycle function is continuing to evolve, giving you the opportunity to strengthen its technical foundation and shape how the team scales its programs. You'll partner with lifecycle strategists who lead audience strategy, value propositions, and messaging, while owning the channels, systems, and campaign operations that bring that strategy to life.

This is a hands-on individual contributor role. You'll shape channel plans, build campaigns, and work through the data and technical details required to launch them across email, push notifications, and Reddit's on-platform channels.

What you'll do
  • Own channel strategy and end-to-end campaign execution, including building, QA, launch, measurement, and optimization
  • Build email campaigns in HubSpot and push campaigns using Reddit's first-party tools
  • Improve the data, segmentation, automation, and dynamic content capabilities that power moderator communications
  • Design experiments using treatment and control groups, then translate results into iterative test plans
  • Partner with lifecycle strategists to bring audience, messaging, and community growth strategies to market
  • Work with Product, Engineering, and Data Science to improve existing tools and develop new ways to reach moderators
  • Monitor campaign performance and email engagement health, troubleshoot technical issues, and maintain high-quality operations
  • Establish the processes and technical standards needed to scale Reddit's moderator lifecycle programs
What we're looking for
  • 7+ years of experience in lifecycle, email, growth, or marketing technology roles, with significant hands-on campaign execution experience
  • Experience building multichannel lifecycle programs for B2C or B2B2C audiences
  • Hands-on experience building and launching campaigns in HubSpot or a similar marketing platform
  • An understanding of marketing data infrastructure and the ability to read and write basic SQL
  • Experience with A/B testing, campaign measurement, and performance analysis
  • Experience partnering with Product, Engineering, and Data Science teams
  • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills
  • A self-starter who can create structure, solve technical problems, and build from zero to one
  • Familiarity with Reddit and a genuine community-first mindset
  • Bonus points for HTML or CSS knowledge.

Benefits:

  • Comprehensive Healthcare Benefits and Income Replacement Programs
  • 401k with Employer Match
  • Global Benefit programs that fit your lifestyle, from workspace to professional development to caregiving support
  • Family Planning Support
  • Gender-Affirming Care
  • Mental Health & Coaching Benefits
  • Flexible Vacation & Paid Volunteer Time Off
  • Generous Paid Parental Leave
