What does a receptionist do?

A receptionist is responsible for greeting visitors, answering and directing phone calls, managing incoming and outgoing correspondence, and performing various administrative tasks. They serve as the first point of contact for clients and guests, creating a welcoming atmosphere and providing information about the organization. Receptionists also handle appointment scheduling, maintain records, and may assist with basic office management duties to ensure smooth daily operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a receptionist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Receptionist, you need excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in basic office administration, typically supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with phone systems, scheduling software, and office productivity tools like Microsoft Office is commonly required. Strong communication, a friendly demeanor, and the ability to multitask help a Receptionist stand out in this role. These skills are important to ensure smooth front-desk operations, create positive first impressions, and efficiently manage daily administrative tasks.

What are some common challenges a receptionist might face in a busy office environment, and how can they be managed?

Receptionists in busy office environments often juggle multiple responsibilities, such as answering high volumes of phone calls, greeting visitors, and handling administrative tasks simultaneously. Managing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, effective time management, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Utilizing digital scheduling tools, maintaining clear communication with team members, and prioritizing tasks can help ensure smooth operations and a positive experience for both colleagues and visitors.

Job description

Join a locally owned Great Clips salon team and help deliver a welcoming, comfortable salon experience. As a receptionist, you'll be the first point of contact for customers and a key support for stylists and salon management throughout the day.

If you enjoy helping people, staying organized, and working as part of a team in an energetic, supportive salon environment, this could be a great fit.

Currently hiring a summer weekend receptionist!
This job is perfect for a cosmetology student, or any high school/college student (age 16 or older) that is interested in the beauty industry.
The salon is busy during the summer, and we need a receptionist to answer phones, greet customers, and assist with cleaning duties such as sweeping hair and doing laundry.
Pay range $12-$14/hr depending on age and experience. Approximately 12 hours per week.

Why you'll love it here

Great Clips salons give receptionists (aka salon coordinators) the structure and support to succeed in a customer-focused role:

  • Great, reliable hourly wage
  • Flexible scheduling with dependable retail hours
  • A team environment where salon staff help each other succeed
  • The opportunity to create positive connections with customers and teammates while supporting essential salon operations
  • Clear processes and training for front-desk responsibilities
  • Experience working in a professional salon setting
  • Opportunities to grow into other roles within the salon, if desired
  • Innovative salon technology, including Online Check-In and the Great Clips App

Employee offerings like medical benefits and paid time off (PTO) may be available at certain locations.

What you bring to the team

To join a Great Clips salon team as a receptionist, you'll need:

  • A friendly, professional approach to customer service
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to stay organized and manage multiple tasks
  • Reliability and a positive attitude
  • Comfort using basic technology and learning new systems
  • A team-first mindset and willingness to support salon operations

No cosmetology or barber license is required for the receptionist position. However, it can be a great opportunity for individuals exploring a future career in the industry to gain salon experience while working toward licensure. Current cosmetology and barber students are encouraged to apply.

Who we are

As the world's largest salon brand, with over 4,400 locally owned and operated salons across the U.S. and Canada, Great Clips combines strong brand recognition, marketing, and support with a close-knit, team-oriented culture. We're passionate about cutting hair and providing great value for the whole family. Talented teams of skilled professionals, along with convenient hours and a great haircut experience, set us apart in our communities.

  • Q: Will I be expected to stand during my shift as a receptionist?
A: Yes. The receptionist role in Great Clips salons is an active, on-your-feet position. You should be prepared to stand for the majority of your shift while greeting customers, maintaining the front area, and staying engaged with the flow of the salon.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
