About the Fellowship. The Center for Family Math seeks a Family Math Fellow to support research, resource development, and field-building activities during the 2026-27 academic year.
This fellowship is designed for a graduate student, doctoral student, or recent graduate, or early-career professional interested in mathematics education, family engagement, special education, learning sciences, child development, or related fields. The Fellow will work closely with Center leadership to elevate and translate research into publications and practical tools that advance the knowledge base and help educators, organizations, and families support children's mathematical learning. The fellowship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a growing national movement focused on family engagement in mathematics while developing skills in research synthesis, knowledge mobilization, and educational communications.
Fellowship Responsibilities
Research and Knowledge Development
● Lead development of the 2026 Family Math Bibliography, including identification, review, selection and presentation of relevant research literature. Sole authorship credit.
● Coordinate a Family Math special issue of an academic journal, in conjunction with the Family Math Research Consortium
● Lead identification and curation of resources for a new online hub focused on educator preparation for Family Math (EdPrep x FM)
● Conduct other Family Math research activities, such as literature reviews, research-to-practice briefs, blog entries (with authorship), and summaries of Center-collected evaluation data.
Resource Development
● Identify and organize practice resources for annual update to the Center’s online searchable Family Math Toolbox
● Assist with planning and facilitating Family Math activities at NAFSCE’s annual National Assembly for Family Engagement in Education and the Center’s annual Family Math Forum (which happens in tandem with the Assembly)
● Support other practitioner-facing capacity building, such as developing resources to engage families of children with learning differences, refining and scaling the Family Math Academy, or other similar activities.
Qualifications. We welcome applicants from a range of disciplines, including mathematics education, family and community engagement, special education, learning sciences, child development, educational psychology, public policy, sociology and related fields.
Preferred qualifications:
● Current graduate student or recent graduate.
● Strong writing, research, and organizational skills.
● Ability to synthesize academic literature for practitioner audiences.
● Interest in educational equity, family engagement, mathematics learning, and/or learning differences.
● Experience with literature reviews, educational research, and/or resource development.
● Ability to self-start, work independently, and manage multiple projects.
Fellowship benefits
The Family Math Fellow will receive:
● Mentorship from leaders in the family engagement and mathematics education fields.
● Opportunities to contribute to nationally relevant projects and publications, with authorship and professional recognition.
● Experience translating research into tools and resources used by educators and families.
● Exposure to nonprofit leadership, partnership development, and field-building efforts.
● Opportunities to connect with researchers, practitioners, and philanthropic leaders working at the intersection of family engagement and mathematics.
Application close date is August 14, 2026. Applications missing any of the three required elements will not be reviewed.
