Recent Graduate Engineer information

What is a recent graduate engineer?

Recent graduate engineers are individuals who have recently completed an engineering degree and are beginning their professional careers. They typically have foundational knowledge in their specific engineering discipline, such as civil, mechanical, electrical, or software engineering. These engineers often start in entry-level positions where they gain practical experience, develop technical skills, and learn workplace protocols. Many employers offer training and mentorship programs to help recent graduates transition smoothly into the workforce.

What are some common challenges recent graduate engineers face during their first year on the job?

Recent graduate engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to real-world project timelines, transitioning from academic theory to practical application, and understanding workplace communication protocols. Navigating team dynamics and learning to balance multiple tasks or projects simultaneously can also be new experiences. Seeking mentorship and actively asking questions can help ease the transition and accelerate professional growth in the early stages of an engineering career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a recent graduate engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Recent Graduate Engineer, you need a solid grasp of engineering fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and at least a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, or SolidWorks, as well as experience with project management tools, is typically expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability will help you excel in collaborative, fast-paced environments. These skills are crucial for effectively contributing to projects, learning quickly on the job, and successfully transitioning from academia to professional engineering practice.

What is the difference between Recent Graduate Engineer vs Entry-Level Engineer?

AspectRecent Graduate EngineerEntry-Level Engineer
QualificationsRecent degree, limited work experienceSame as recent graduate, possibly some internships
Work EnvironmentTraining-focused, supervised rolesOperational roles with increasing responsibilities
Industry UsageCommonly used for new graduates entering engineering rolesBroader term for early-career engineers

Recent Graduate Engineer typically refers to individuals who have recently completed their engineering degree and are starting their professional careers, often in training or supervised roles. Entry-Level Engineer is a broader term that includes recent graduates and those with minimal work experience beginning their engineering jobs. Both roles are aimed at early-career professionals, but 'Recent Graduate Engineer' emphasizes the candidate's recent academic completion, while 'Entry-Level Engineer' highlights the job level regardless of graduation timing.

Are recent graduate engineers struggling to find jobs?

Recent graduate engineers often face competitive job markets, especially in fields requiring specialized skills or certifications. Employment prospects can vary based on industry demand, geographic location, and the current economic climate, but gaining practical experience through internships and developing technical skills can improve job prospects.

How to get a job as a recent graduate engineer?

To secure a job as a recent graduate engineer, candidates should build a strong resume highlighting relevant coursework, internships, and technical skills such as CAD or programming. Networking through career fairs, professional organizations, and online platforms like LinkedIn can also improve job prospects. Additionally, obtaining relevant certifications or licenses may enhance employability in certain engineering fields.

What jobs do recent graduate engineers go into?

Recent graduate engineers typically pursue entry-level roles such as design engineer, project engineer, manufacturing engineer, or quality engineer. These positions often require knowledge of engineering principles, technical skills, and sometimes certifications like EIT or FE, and may involve working in industries such as construction, manufacturing, or technology.

About Trekor

Headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia (BC), Canada, Trekor Metals Limited (Trekor) is a leading North American copper producer with a robust development pipeline of minerals projects and properties in Canada and the United States.

Known for seeing opportunities where other mining companies do not, Trekor has a two-decade track record of delivering value for shareholders, employees, communities where we operate, and others โ€” from acquiring the Gibraltar Mine in BC for a single dollar and building it into Canada's second-largest copper producer, to transforming Arizonaโ€™s Florence Copper into the world's first greenfield in-situ copper recovery operation.

Trekor goes Beyond Potential.

Role Overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join our Environmental Department at Gibraltar Mine. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent or experienced engineering graduate to gain hands-on experience in environmental monitoring, water management, and reclamation at one of Canadaโ€™s largest open pit copper mines.
The successful candidate will assist with environmental field programs, data analysis, and compliance reporting, while supporting continuous improvement initiatives to promote environmental stewardship and operational excellence. This role provides the opportunity to work closely with senior professionals, develop technical competencies, and progress toward Professional Engineer registration through Trekorโ€™s EIT development framework.

Core Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with the Health, Safety, and Reclamation Code for Mines in British Columbia and applicable environmental permits.
  • Participate in and promote a safety-first culture within the Environmental Department and across site operations.
  • Assist with environmental monitoring programs including surface water, groundwater, and reclamation activities.
  • Support management of hydrometric stations, water treatment systems, and field instrumentation.
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret environmental data to support permit compliance and operational decision-making.
  • Assist with environmental inspections, audits, and reporting to regulatory agencies.
  • Collaborate with other departments to promote environmental awareness and best practices across site operations.
  • Support continuous improvement through innovation, data analysis, and optimization of environmental programs.
  • Participate in the preparation of environmental reports, presentations, and technical documentation.
  • Support Trekorโ€™s EIT program through mentorship, professional development, and cross-functional project experience.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Environmental, Civil, Chemical, Geological or Mining Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Registered or eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
  • Prior experience or co-op experience in mining, industrial environmental management, or water monitoring is an asset.
Skills & Competencies
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); experience with GIS, AutoCAD, or database tools is an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment to health, safety, and environmental excellence.
  • Valid Canadian driverโ€™s license and ability to work in a field environment as required.
The Community
  • Williams Lake has a population of approximately 12,000 but services nearly 25,000 as it is a central hub for many outlying smaller communities
  • Adult recreational leagues for many popular sports including hockey, soccer, and softball
  • A fantastic trail network for mountain biking, walking, and hiking
  • Dozens of nearby lakes for fishing, paddling, and camping opportunities
  • Close by cross country and downhill skiing venues
Compensation

At all Trekor locations, we pride ourselves in offering a challenging and rewarding work environment. Our employees have the opportunity for career and professional growth through development, education, and succession plan programs.

Additionally, our compensation and benefits package includes competitive salaries and vacation packages, health, dental, and disability insurance benefits, and an RRSP matching program.
