Job description

The Assistant Residential Mentor & Character Coach is a proactive leader who drives an engaging and safe residential experience for our studentโ€“athletes. This role combines handson leadership in the residence halls with the opportunity to shape and deliver innovative leadership and characterdevelopment programs. The ideal candidate thrives in dynamic environments, communicates with influence, and balances structure with creativity to promote growth, accountability, and inclusion among a diverse student community.ย 

Key Responsibilities:ย 

  • Lead and inspire a positive residential community by actively engaging with students, modeling strong character, and fostering social growth and inclusion.ย 
  • Own the oversight of assigned residence halls, ensuring a safe, secure, and developmentally enriching environment.ย 
  • Design and deliver impactful programs that integrate leadership, character development, and multicultural awareness into daily student life.ย 
  • Exercise sound judgment and autonomy in managing situations that affect student wellbeing, safety, and conduct, coordinating with Student Life and Campus Safety staff as appropriateย 
  • Collaborate across departments to align residential programming with academic, athletic, and personal development goals.ย 
  • Communicate with influence by serving as a key liaison with parents/guardians, coaches, and campus staff, ensuring consistent expectations and shared accountability.ย 
  • Drive continuous improvement by evaluating existing programs and contributing new ideas that elevate the studentathlete experience.ย 
  • Actively supervise, engage with, and promote social growth and inclusion among students during oncampus and offcampus activities, including activity park, dining hall and rec areas, campus events, and student excursions.ย 
  • Monitor students throughout campus and enforce policies and procedures, ensuring that the studentathlete code of conduct is maintained.ย 
  • Promote a positive, healthy environment for studentathletes during social and engagement activities.ย 
  • Collaborate and communicate during emergency response and crisis management situations, including weather events, lockdowns, student illness, and injury.ย 
  • Attend and contribute to department meetings.ย 
  • Other duties as assigned.ย 

Qualifications:ย 

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree or equivalent experience in Education, Child Psychology or related areaย 
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence, motivate and engage diverse groups of studentsย 
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and decisiveness in highpressure or complex situationsย 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to adapt style to connect effectively with students, parents and colleaguesย 
  • Proven ability to balance structure with flexibility, maintaining accountability while fostering growth and inclusionย 
  • Highly organized and proactive, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and follow through consistentlyย 
  • Collaborative mindset with a track record of building crossfunctional partnerships to drive resultsย 
  • A strong sense of initiative and continuous improvement โ€“ looks for opportunities to elevate programs rather than maintain the status quoย 
  • Resilient and adaptable in fastpaced, dynamic environmentsย 

Preferred Qualifications:ย 

  • At least 1 year experience working with students grades 6 through 12ย 
  • Masterโ€™s degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology or related areaย 
  • Experience in education, sports or related areaย 
  • Experience as a collegiate athleteย 
  • Experience with residential life in a boarding school environment and/or summer campsย 
  • Experience in counseling, crisis response, and mediationย 
  • Experience in a highpressure, academic/performance settingย 
  • First Aid and CPR Certificationย 
  • Proficient with computers and computer systemsย 
  • Bilingualย 

Physical Demands and Work Environment:ย 

  • Ability to lift, move, push and pull equipment or boxes in excess of 40lbs.ย 
  • Must be able to move around residence hall, including stairsย 
  • Ability to spend long periods of time on their feetโ€”walking, standing, etc.ย 
  • Ability to work dynamic schedule based on operational needs, including nights, weekends, and holidaysย
