Rebar Machine Operator information

What does a rebar machine operator do?

A Rebar Machine Operator is responsible for operating machinery that cuts, bends, and shapes steel reinforcing bars (rebar) used in construction projects. They read blueprints or work orders, set up and adjust machines, and ensure that the finished products meet specified measurements and quality standards. The job requires attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and adherence to safety protocols, as working with heavy machinery and steel can be hazardous.

What are some common challenges faced by rebar machine operators on the job?

Rebar Machine Operators often encounter challenges such as maintaining precision while cutting or bending rebar to specific measurements, especially under tight project deadlines. Working in environments that can be noisy and require strict adherence to safety protocols is also common. Additionally, operators may need to troubleshoot machinery issues quickly to minimize downtime and coordinate closely with other construction team members to ensure materials are prepared correctly for ongoing projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a rebar machine operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Rebar Machine Operator, you need mechanical aptitude, basic math skills, and experience with construction or manufacturing equipment, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with rebar cutting, bending machines, and safety protocols—sometimes enhanced by OSHA or equipment-specific certifications—is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure precise fabrication, workplace safety, and efficient teamwork on construction projects.

Job description

Suncoast Post Tension, Ltd., a Keller company, is an established post-tension and rebar manufacturing company that has been in business for over 30 years. We supply construction related materials to builders from one of our eight facilities in the US. We are seeking an experienced Rebar Fabrication Laborer who is ready to take the next step in their career. If you have deep, hands-on experience in a rebar fabrication shop and are looking for a clear pathway to transition into a Shop Foreman role, this is your opportunity.

This position operates in a fast-paced, high-volume warehouse environment. You will initially lead by example on the production floor—safely operating heavy fabrication machinery—while shadowing current leadership to learn our operations, workflow scheduling, and team management.

  • Machine Operation: Safely and proficiently operate rebar shears, benders, and automated MEP or Schnell fabrication equipment to cut and bend steel to precise engineering specifications

  • Leadership Pathway: Assist the current Shop Foreman with daily operations, production scheduling, material tracking, and quality control checks, preparing to step into the Foreman role

  • Quality Assurance: Read and interpret placing drawings, blueprints, and shear/bend lists to ensure all finished products meet exact tolerances and project standards

  • Material Handling: Safely lift, carry, and maneuver materials throughout production cycles

  • Mentorship & Safety: Help train junior fabricators on equipment operation and enforce strict adherence to company safety protocols, including PPE compliance and routine machine maintenance

  • Must have direct, verifiable experience working in a rebar fabrication shop
  • Proven hands-on experience operating the following specific machinery:
    • Rebar Shears (mechanical or hydraulic)
    • Rebar Benders (table benders, radius benders)
    • MEP or Schnell automated fabrication equipment
  • Physical Ability: Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs on a regular, repetitive basis throughout the shift
  • Work Environment: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, heavy industrial warehouse environment that can be subject to seasonal temperature variations
  • Schedule Flexibility: Ability to work 12-hour shifts starting at 4:00 AM. Ready and willing to work available overtime to meet project deadlines
  • Strong ability to read and accurately interpret rebar tags, blueprints, and bending schedules

Salary Range: $20.00-$25.00 per hour DOE

Actual salary will be based on a variety of factors including relevant internal and external experience, knowledge, skills, scope of job, geographical location or other factors permitted by law

Benefits:

  • 401(k) + matching
  • Health, Dental, Vision insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Paid time off (PTO)
  • Holiday Pay

Suncoast Post-Tension is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We encourage qualified women, minorities, veterans, individuals with disabilities, and others to apply.
